5A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2016 Pierce press aide quits over debate Riled by stance on violence against women By PARIS ACHEN Capital Bureau Stacey Kafka, press secre- tary for Bud Pierce, has left the GOP gubernatorial nom- inee’s campaign because of comments the candidate made about violence against women at a debate Friday. “As a young woman, I was greatly offended by what was said at the Portland City Club (debate), and that is why I am Stacey Kafka Bud Pierce no longer with the Bud Pierce campaign,” Kafka said. Pierce made the comments in a response to a question about what the candidates would do to improve the lot of women in Oregon. The question made reference to a recent report showing that Oregon women experience sexual assault and domestic violence at a greater rate than the national average. “A woman that has great education and training and a great job is not susceptible to this kind of abuse by men,” Pierce said. He made the comment after Gov. Kate Brown answered the question and publicly disclosed in her response that she has been a victim of domestic vio- lence. He later apologized to Brown and others who were offended by his comments. He told the Pamplin Media Group/EO Media Group that he misstated his words and had meant to say that women who are educated and who have resources are better able to escape abusive situations. Kafka, 25, said that she resigned two hours after the debate between Pierce and Brown. “As a strong woman, I felt I needed to stand for my moral values,” Kafka said. The Pierce campaign reported Monday that Kafka resigned for personal rea- sons. Kafka is engaged to Jacob Daniels, Oregon state director for Republican pres- idential nominee Donald Trump. On Friday, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported that Trump was pulling Daniels — his lone paid campaign staff member in Oregon — out of the state. The Trump campaign sent Daniels to Michigan instead, where Trump is trying to gain a lead on Clinton. Kafka said her decision had nothing to do with Dan- iels’ new assignment. She has no plans to move to Mich- igan, as some Republicans were suggesting on Twitter. Pierce recently yanked his endorsement of Trump because of Trump’s offensive comments. The Salem oncol- ogist said at the time that he had no plans to vote for Trump or Democratic nomi- nee Hillary Clinton. “I haven’t paid much attention to Donald Trump until this campaign hon- estly,” Pierce said at Friday’s debate. “I don’t like real- ity TV, but it’s clear to me from the language he uses and what he says and how he offends people.” Kafka, a former reporter for KEZI 9 in Eugene, joined the Pierce campaign in June. Nellie deVries of deVries Public Affairs is serving as Pierce’s new press secretary. deVries said Monday the campaign has no further com- ment on Kafka’s departure. WORLD IN BRIEF Katrina, which caused major damage to South Florida in 2005, and Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 storm, leveled much of the city of Homestead in 1992. The latter storm was on the minds of some oficials Tuesday — both Miami-Dade County Commission Chairman Jean Monestime and U.S. Rep. Carlos Curbelo mistak- enly called the current hurricane “Andrew” during a press confer- ence, drawing nervous laughter. Associated Press Pence calm and steady, but dodges in defending Trump WASHINGTON — Republican Mike Pence was calm and steady in the face of Democrat Tim Kaine’s iery and frequent challenges. But when it came to defending Donald Trump, Pence dodged, sidestepped or was silent about some of his running mate’s most provocative words. Kaine aggressively pressured Pence to vouch for Trump throughout the 90-minute debate, often citing the brash business- man’s own words. Pence defended Trump’s tax history, but maneu- vered around criticism of Trump’s demeaning comments about women, his public doubting of President Barack Obama’s citizen- ship and broader questions about temperament. “I can’t imagine how Governor Pence can defend the insult- driven, me-irst style of Donald Trump,” said Kaine, the Virginia senator and Hillary Clinton’s No. 2. The usually easygoing Kaine went on the attack from the start and seemed determined to make the debate a referendum on whether Trump has the disposition for the Oval Ofice. He slammed Trump for having called women pigs and slobs, and con- demned the GOP nominee’s praise of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Pence frequently avoided taking the bait — a shrewd move for a conservative darling who could have eyes on the Oval Ofice himself if Trump loses in November. But for voters seeking assur- ances from Pence about Trump’s temperament, there was little to cling to. Bahamas next up for Matthew after destructive path in Haiti PETIT-GOAVE, Haiti — Hurricane Matthew churned toward the Bahamas early today with a spreading mix of high winds, heavy rains and a dangerous storm surge, leaving widespread dam- age and human suffering behind in Haiti’s poor, rural southwest- ern peninsula. At least 11 deaths had been blamed on the powerful storm during its weeklong march across the Caribbean, ive of them in Haiti. But with a key bridge washed out, roads impassable and phone communications down, the western tip of Haiti was isolated and there was no word on dead and injured. Forecasters said the high winds, pounding rains and storm surge were already beginning to have an impact in the southern Bahamas as the powerful Category 3 hurricane left Haiti and east- ern Cuba behind and marched toward the island chain over open waters today. A day earlier, Matthew swept across a remote area of Haiti with Joe Raedle/Pool via AP Republican vice-presidential nominee Gov. Mike Pence, left, and Democratic vice-presidential nominee Sen. Tim Kaine exchange opinions as moderator Elaine Quijano of CBS News listens during the vice-presidential debate at Longwood University in Farmville, Va., Tuesday. 145 mph winds, and government leaders said they weren’t close to fully gauging the impact in the vulnerable, lood-prone country where less powerful storms have killed thousands. “What we know is that many, many houses have been dam- aged. Some lost rooftops and they’ll have to be replaced while others were totally destroyed,” Interior Minister Francois Anick Joseph said. Complacency worries oicials as Hurricane Matthew nears Florida FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Hurricane Matthew’s slog toward the East Coast has government oficials worried about complacency, especially in South Florida, which hasn’t seen a major hurricane in 11 years. South Carolina’s governor said she would issue an evacuation order today so that 1 million people would have time to leave the coast, and residents up and down the Eastern seaboard locked to hardware stores, grocery aisles and gas stations to prepare for the powerful storm. A dangerous Category 3 storm with sustained winds of 125 mph, Matthew was bearing down on the southern Bahamas early today amid forecasters’ predictions it would be very near Flori- da’s Atlantic coast by Thursday evening. Already the hurricane was spreading high winds, heavy rain and a dangerous storm surge ahead of it on its approach to the Bahamas, forecasters said. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Matthew — recently a Category 4 storm and at one brief point a ierce Category 5 — will remain a powerful storm at least through Thursday night. It added that while maximum winds decreased slightly in recent hours, the luctuation in intensity was expected and some slight strengthening is forecast in coming days. Anushka Naiknaware, 13, placed in the top eight in an inter- national science contest run by Google. She won the Lego Edu- cation Builder Award, which included the scholarship, a free trip to Lego world headquarters in Denmark and a year of entrepre- neurship mentoring from a Lego executive, reported the Orego- nian/OregonLive (http://bit.ly/2cQeemn ). Large wounds must be kept moist to promote healing, but changing bandages too often to check moisture levels can make things worse. To solve that problem, Naiknaware, a seventh-grader at Stoller Middle School in Portland, designed and tested a ban- dage that is embedded with tiny monitors. They can sense moisture levels and allow medical workers to determine whether the dress- ing has dried out enough that the bandage needs to be changed. Naiknaware created the sensors by printing a fractal pattern using ink containing graphene nanoparticles. The particles can accurately detect when moisture levels have dropped. Google judges named her one of 16 global inalists, all of whom traveled to the company’s headquarters in Mountain View, Califor- nia, to present their project. Naiknaware was the youngest person to win one of the global prizes. Turkish soldier, 2 Syrian rebels killed ighting IS in Syria ANKARA, Turkey — Turkish military oficials say two Syr- ian opposition ighters and a Turkish soldier were killed in clashes with Islamic State militants in northern Syria. At least 18 IS ight- ers were also killed. The oficials said today that the two rebels were killed in bat- tles southwest of the town of al-Rai, during which the Turkish backed-opposition forces took control of four residential areas: Turkmen Bari, Kuaybah, Boztepe and Hardanah. Separately, a Turkish soldier was killed and three others were slightly wounded in ighting in the opposition-held area of Ziyara, which a group of IS militants tried to iniltrate.
