NEWS/SPORTS THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2016 Oregon’s streak over No. 5 Washington won’t be mentioned WORLD IN BRIEF Associated Press Syrian pro-government forces press attack on city of Aleppo BEIRUT — Syrian rebels say pro-government forces are pressing their assault on the eastern, rebel-held neighborhoods of Aleppo, this time attacking the city from the south in a bid to pen- etrate opposition-controlled areas. The Islamic Front rebel coalition said on Twitter today that its factions repelled an advance on the Sheikh Saeed neighborhood. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the government offensive is accompanied by airstrikes on the con- tested neighborhoods. The monitoring group says more than 400 civilians have been killed in and around Aleppo since the collapse of a U.S. and Rus- sian-brokered cease-ire two weeks ago, mainly in the rebel-held east of the embattled city. In the offensive, health facilities and hospitals have repeatedly come under attack. Syria peace eforts plunge as US suspends talks with Russia WASHINGTON — International efforts to end the ighting in Syria have been dealt a serious blow, with the United States sus- pending direct contacts with Russia on halting the war, and chilly relations are turning even frostier after Russia put a hold on a plu- tonium disposal deal with Washington. The two decisions, announced in their respective capitals just hours apart Monday, were ostensibly unrelated but underscored deep mistrust and rising tensions between the former Cold War foes, who are increasingly at odds on a number of issues, particu- larly Syria and Ukraine. The moves further reduce areas of Washington-Moscow coop- eration, yet their most immediate impact may be the potential death blow delivered to halting attempts to revive a moribund ceaseire in Syria, get desperately needed humanitarian aid to besieged com- munities and begin negotiations on political transition that could mean the ouster of President Bashar Assad. The Obama administration said it decided to cut off discus- sions on Syria because Russia had not lived up to the terms of last month’s agreement to restore a tattered cease-ire and ensure sus- tained deliveries of humanitarian aid to besieged cities, such as Aleppo, which has been under bombardment from Russian and Syrian forces. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said: “What’s clear is that there is nothing more for the United States and Russia to talk about with regard to trying to reach an agreement that would reduce the violence inside of Syria and that’s tragic.” Clinton seeks support from women in suburban Philadelphia WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton is campaigning in the Phil- adelphia suburbs today with daughter Chelsea Clinton and actress Elizabeth Banks at an event aimed at making the case to female voters. Clinton is expected to talk about her agenda to help children and families and take questions from voters in Haverford, Pennsylva- nia. Her campaign is making a major push in the suburbs around Philadelphia and appealing to college-educated voters who have backed Republicans in past presidential elections. Clinton will campaign later in the day in Harrisburg. Her cam- paign is looking to deny rival Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, which has supported a Democratic presidential nominee in every election since 1988. Tonight’s vice presidential debate pits a former radio host who’s described himself as “Rush Limbaugh on decaf” (Pence) against a harmonica-playing former missionary whose aw-shucks style has spawned a thousand dad jokes (Kaine). Barring the unexpected, their 90-minute faceoff is unlikely to alter the trajectory of the presidential race. But don’t hit the snooze button just yet. Debate history suggests there’s still the potential for some memorable moments. Hurricane Matthew bears down on southwest Haiti, heads north PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The towns and villages of Hai- ti’s southwestern peninsula battened down as best they could early today for a lashing by life-threatening winds, rains and storm surge unleashed by powerful Hurricane Matthew. The dangerous Category 4 storm was also dropping heavy rains on other parts of Haiti, the hemisphere’s poorest country where many people live in limsy shacks in areas prone to looding. Heavy rain also fell on Jamaica and dangerous rainfall was a threat for the Dominican Republic, which adjoins Haiti. Matthew had maximum sustained winds of 145 mph (230 kph) early today, and forecasters said its slowly advancing center would likely pass near or over Haiti’s southwestern tip after dawn. It would continue on for another landfall expected in the lightly pop- ulated eastern end of Cuba, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said. “We are looking at a dangerous hurricane that is heading into the vicinity of western Haiti and eastern Cuba,” said Rich- ard Pasch, a senior hurricane specialist with the center. “People who are impacted by things like looding and mudslides hopefully would get out and relocate because that’s where we have seen loss of life in the past.” The center said that a tropical storm watch or hurricane watch was likely for parts of Florida later today as the storm moved north. Marine commanders from both sides said at the opening cere- mony that the exercises, involving 1,100 American and 400 Fili- pino military personnel, are aimed at improving readiness by the two countries to respond to a range of crises while deepening their historic ties. Angered by U.S. criticism of his deadly anti-drug campaign, President Rodrigo Duterte said last week that the maneuvers would be the last of his term, which began in June. Twelve. And no, that has nothing to do with the Seattle Seahawks. It’s the number of Wash- ington’s consecutive losses to Oregon, one that has grown each year since 2003 and will continue to linger over the Huskies football program until its losing streak to the Ducks is inally snapped. So will it be brought up this week by Washington coach Chris Petersen? Don’t even think about it. “I don’t know why I’d do that. No,” Petersen said Monday. From the time he left Boise State to accept the job at Washington, the question of when Petersen would end the Huskies’ losing ways has followed him everywhere. It’s the biggest topic among fans and alumni, more so than any- thing related to in-state rival Washington State. This week presents what could be Washington’s best chance to end the losing skid against the Ducks. The Hus- kies are coming off a thor- ough dismantling of Stanford 44-6 on Friday night — one of its most impressive vic- tories in years — while the Ducks are wounded, hav- ing lost three straight after an 18-point loss at Washington State. There may not be a better time for Washington to end the losing skid. But even in the simplest of ways, the Hus- kies are avoiding talk about the skid. Washington’s game notes mentions Oregon has “had the edge of late, win- ning 17 of the last 21,” but doesn’t mention having lost 12 straight. (except Tuesday, Oct. 11, when Astoria hosts Seaside for an Endowment double- header. Boys varsity starts at 5:30 p.m., followed by girls’ game).
