While Trump could have hit Clinton harder regarding the attack on a diplo- matic compound in Benghazi, Libya, and the inances of the Clinton Foundation, he said, Trump did a good job. McNulty said the biggest surprise was that Clinton could make it through the entire debate. “I know they were doing a good job of hiding it, but she does have health issues,” he said. “I’m surprised she could stand an hour and a half.” In Astoria, liberals gath- ered at the Inferno Room. Tessa James Scheller, a former dele- gate for U.S. Sen Bernie Sand- ers, said today Clinton clearly did a better job showing she could have coherent thoughts and lay out policy. While Trump stayed on message for the irst part of the debate, she said, he eventually gave Clin- ton the more reactive response Democrats were hoping for. “I think Donald stumbled terribly in regards to race,” Scheller said. “He wants to paint a picture of race with Afri- can-Americans and Hispanics living in ghettos and shooting one another.” She said Trump’s comment about being smart for not pay- ing federal income taxes was unpatriotic. Huge audience Both campaigns knew the highly anticipated irst debate could mark a turning point six weeks before Election Day, but it was unclear if either can- didate would reap signiicant gains. Trump and Clinton are locked in an exceedingly close race and competing vigorously to win over undecided voters. CNN reports that “Mon- day’s face-off may well have been the most-watched debate in American history.” Actual viewership igures will be released by Nielsen on later today. Debate tactics Clinton’s preferred tactic — provoking Trump with jabs aimed at rattling him — con- tinued to pay dividends the day after the debate. After brushing off Clinton’s claim that he’d once shamed a former Miss Universe winner for her weight, Trump dug deeper today. “She gained a massive amount of weight. It was a real problem. We had a real prob- lem,” Trump told “Fox and Friends” about the 1996 winner of the pageant he once owned. Though he said on Twit- ter he had “really enjoyed” the debate, he accused moder- ator Lester Holt of a left-lean- ing performance and going harder on him than Clinton. He insisted he had “no snif- les” and no allergies despite the#sniflegate speculation that had exploded on social media. And in one of the more bizarre moments in presidential debate history, he loated the possibility that organizers had intentionally set his “terrible” microphone to a lower volume than Clinton’s. Trump said he “didn’t want to believe in con- spiracy theories” but pushed the theory anyway that it was “set up that way on purpose.” “Anybody who’s about the microphone is not having a good night,” a sardonic Clin- ton told reporters on her plane as she lew today to North Car- olina. She accused Trump of making “demonstrably untrue” claims in the debate. Back to the trail With precious few weeks left to campaign, both candi- dates returned promptly to the trail. The proposed hotel expan- sion would contribute about $70,000 in new lodging taxes each year, providing economic beneit, the application stated. According to the city budget, lodging taxes are estimated to make up about 50 per- cent of the city’s general fund resources. Commissioner Joseph Bernt said the project would bring in money for the city, adding that 18 rooms does not seem “over- bearing” compared to visitors who create trafic issues with- out staying overnight. “These day-trippers are not providing the $70,000,” Bernt said. “If you’re going to sell out to tourism, you ought to sell out for money rather than clogged arteries in the town.” Kerr said the city is “not poor.” “I don’t see the demand being we need the money and the revenue,” she said. “What it gets spent on is more celebra- tions and holidays to bring in more tourists.” Though Bernt said the hotel addition could be a “good invest- ment for the town,” he voted against allowing the expansion. She said a development will eventually be built on the lot. “If it’s homes that are per- manently occupied by resi- dents, I would assume those residents will use a great deal of water,” Patrick said. The proposed development is located in a limited commer- cial zone, where a new hotel or motel is not allowed. How- ever, since the property was a hotel site before 1979 zon- ing ordinance changes, a hotel could still be built on the lot under the city’s pre-existing use regulations. The lot, formerly the Can- non Village Motel, has been vacant since the former motel’s structure was torn down in 2006. The request was based on a previous conditional use approval that has since expired. The centerpiece of Trump’s case against Clinton is that the former senator and secretary of state is little more than a career politician who has squan- dered opportunities to address the domestic and international problems she’s now pledging to tackle as president. “She’s got experience,” he said, “but it’s bad experience.” When Trump made a crack about Clinton taking time off the campaign trail to prepare for the debate, she turned it into a validation of her readiness for the White House. “I think Donald just criti- cized me for preparing for this debate,” Clinton said. “And, yes, I did. And you know what else I prepared for? I prepared to be president. And I think that’s a good thing.” Owen urged discussions with developers to over- come roadblocks to con- struction.
