THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21, 2016
“Will you be watching the presidential debates,
or have you already made up your mind?”
“I’ve watched a
portion of them.
I’ve made up my
mind, but I’m
not satisfi ed with
either of them.”
THE DAILY ASTORIAN // QUESTION OF THE WEEK
“I will be traveling,
so I won’t be watch-
ing them — but I
would be watching if
I was home. And yes,
I’ve made up my mind.”
Bev Shaw, Portland
“Honestly, I won’t watch it. I
think the choice has already
been made. I think we’re
screwed, no matter what.
This is the worst election year
I’ve ever seen.”
Chris Shaw, Portland
Melissa Coberly, Astoria

SeaPort provided air service
between Astoria Regional Air-
port and Portland or Newport
in the spring of 2008 to 2010.
The airline’s attempt to
reorganize buckled this month
after the airline learned it
would lose a key contract and
a line of credit helping keep it
afl oat.
An attorney for the airline’s
creditors said the fl eet would
be grounded. A Portland Inter-
national Airport spokeswoman
confi rmed SeaPort would
cease operations. A spokes-
woman for the airline couldn’t
be immediately reached.
SeaPort, which primarily
operates out of its Portland and
Memphis hubs, fi led for Chap-
ter 11 bankruptcy protection in
February.
Clatsop C ounty’s season-
ally adjusted unemployment
rate was 5.4 percent in August,
up 0.3 percent from the pre-
vious month but down 0.3
percent from the year prior,
according to the state Employ-
ment Department. The county
had the same unemployment
rate as the state, and was one-
half percent higher than the
national rate.
The county expected to
lose 50 jobs in August, but ulti-
mately lost 140. That left non-
farm payroll employment at
17,970, 440 more than a year
before, for a growth rate of 2.4
percent.
In August, the private sec-
tor shed 90 jobs, and the gov-
ernment another 50. Food
services and drinking places
were the only signifi cant
points of growth, adding 30
jobs. Food manufacturing
trimmed 40 jobs. Accommo-
dations cut 40. Local govern-
ment education fell by 50 jobs
over the month.
Columbia County’s season-
ally adjusted unemployment
rate was 6.7 percent in August,
up 0.3 percent from the previ-
ous month but down 0.6 per-
cent from the year prior.
Tillamook County, mean-
while, had a seasonally
adjusted unemployment rate
in August of 5.6 percent, up
0.3 percent from the previous
month but down 0.3 percent
from a year prior.
