SPORTS 8A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2016 Lady Fish battle wind, rain and Columbians Astoria kickers score first win By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian WARRENTON — It was an early September game, with a touch of November Thurs- day afternoon at Volunteer Field in Warrenton, where Astoria hosted Rainier in a nonleague girls soccer contest. The Lady Fishermen battled the elements and the Columbi- ans, and beat both, as a goal by Astoria directly off a corner kick in the second half held up for a 1-0 win. It was Astoria’s first victory outside the Cowapa League since 2013. “It’s a good win for the girls,” said Astoria coach Tim Fastabend. “We certainly didn’t dominate. Rainier had some chances — probably too many — in the first half. “We moved the ball well at times, and at times we had a few mental lapses,” he said. “We’re still adjusting to everything, but we’re happy with the win.” The Columbians had six shot attempts in the first half, but only one on frame. After Astoria keeper Lexi The Daily Astorian/File Photo Astoria’s Jenna Rudolph, No. 5, and Valley Catholic’s So- phia Cowles, No. 19, fight for possession during a soccer match last fall. Law came out of the goal to chal- lenge a play, a shot by Rainier’s Abby Rosian towards an open net ended up hitting her team- mate. Another shot was deflected away by an Astoria defender. The Fishermen — playing with the wind in the first half — had just one opportunity in the first 40 minutes. A crossing pass from Rachel Simmons to Sarah Lertora was knocked down by Rainier keeper Maria Alberto. The winds calmed in the second half, and so did the Lady Fishermen, who had seven shots on goal in the final 40 minutes. The first — just seconds into the half — was a breakaway for Hannah McCauley that was stopped by Alberto. Ten minutes into the half (the 50th minute), the Lady Fish got their goal. Alberto had covered a ball in front of the net, but two Asto- ria players teamed up to take it away, and the Fishermen ended up with a corner kick. And that’s all Jenna Rudolph needed, as the senior launched a kick from the right corner, the ball deflected off a Columbian defender and into the net for the game’s lone goal. Rainier had six corner kick opportunities in the second half, but managed just one shot on goal, a one-on-one for Rosian that was halted by Law in the 75th minute. Astoria takes a week off before heading to St. Hel- ens for a nonleague game next Thursday. In other nonleague action Thursday, Seaside and North Marion tied 2-2 in Aurora. Astoria scores big victory at the net The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — Astoria out- lasted Rainier in a volleyball marathon match Thursday, as the Lady Fishermen topped one of the top 3A programs in the state in five games, 23-25, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19, 15-5. “Every game was close, except the last one,” said Asto- ria coach Jessie Todd, fol- lowing her second win in two matches. “I was real pleased with how the girls persevered and didn’t get down,” she said. “It’s a good win, because Mike (Edwards, the Rainier coach) always has a good program.” The Columbians’ Bre- ana Edwards — a “very big, very good player,” Todd said — was held in check by the Fishermen. “Jacqueline (Jarrett) stuffed her, and Darian (Hageman) also had some nice blocks,” Astoria’s Au- rora Grafton, No. 3, tries to spike the ball while defended by Tillamook’s Jordan Zweif- el, No. 8, during a vol- leyball match last fall in Astoria. The Daily Astorian File Photo Todd said. “All the girls played well. I was pleased with my set- ters (Aurora Grafton and Madi Landwehr). They did a nice job of placing their sets. And we talked about moving our block back and forth, and we did a nice job of executing that.” Astoria takes part in the annual Southridge Tournament Saturday, where the Lady Fish- ermen will face Southridge, McMinnville and Estacada in pool play. Astoria soccer tops Corbett, 3-2 The Daily Astorian CORBETT — Two days after a 7-1 loss at Catlin Gabel, the Astoria boys soccer team hit the road again Thursday, and returned with a win. Astoria’s Jorge Herrejon scored two goals, and a score by teammate Aldo Cruz with six minutes left broke a 2-2 tie to give the Fishermen a 3-2 victory at Corbett. “It was a very physical game,” said Astoria’s Lee Cain, who picked up his first official win as the Fishermen coach. “Both teams battled, probably a little too hard at times. “We had two yellow cards, and there was a little scuf- fle at the end,” he said, which resulted in double red cards, with a player from each team ejected. The Cardinals held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but the Fishermen responded with goals follow- The Daily Astorian/File Photo Astoria’s Jorge Herrejon, No. 9, fights for posses- sion with Seaside’s Taylor Barnes, No. 11, in the sec- ond half of a soccer match last year. ing each Corbett score. Trailing 1-0, Herrejon scored his first goal off a cross- ing pass from his brother Luis with four minutes left in the first half, and the teams headed to halftime tied 1-1. Corbett scored first in the second half, before Herrejon tallied his second goal, drib- bling into the box and scor- ing unassisted from close range. With six minutes remain- ing, off “a medley of passes,” Cruz scored the final, game-winning goal, also from close range. “We had a lot of players step up and play well,” Cain said. “The twins (Luis and Jorge Herrejon) did a great job, as did Aldo and Gustavo (Velasquez). “Kyle (Birge) had an excel- lent game in goal, with six or seven stops, even though Cor- bett only had three or four shots on goal,” he said. “Jose Cruz also had a solid perfor- mance, and Christian Medi- na-Perez had a nice game out on the wing.” The Columbians had to play two matches Thursday, back-to-back. Before facing Astoria, Rainier defeated Seaside in three games, 25-20, 27-25, 25-12. Krissy Barendse-Goodman/For the Daily Astorian Knappa’s Mack Strain, No. 7, goes up for an attack against the Clatskanie block Thursday night, in a non- league volleyball match. Tigers top Lady Loggers in four The Daily Astorian KNAPPA — Knappa got off to a great start Thursday night at home, but the finish belonged to Clatskanie. After losing Game 1, the Tigers bounced back and won the next three to win the nonleague match at Knappa, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-19. The Loggers “were very competitive in each and every game,” said Knappa coach Jeff Kaul, holding early leads in each one, but the Loggers were unable to put the Tigers away. Knappa’s Kaitlyn Landwehr had seven assists and five ace serves to go with her three kills; Alisha Murphy had six digs and four aces; and Paris Vanderburg was 15-for-16 serving, with five kills and four assists. Jaden Miethe sparked the defensive effort with 22 digs, while Kourtney Tischer added five digs, and Kaitlyn Truax finished with four kills. Overall, Kaul called it “a good effort tonight. It is good to play these bigger 3A teams (the Loggers lost the night before to Warrenton). Each time we play — whether we win or lose — we need to learn from both our mistakes and our victories, learn from each team that we face, find out what works for us, make adjustments on the things that don’t and get ready for the next challenge.” Knappa returns to the court Saturday for an all-day tournament at Neah-Kah-Nie. Krissy Barendse-Goodman/For the Daily Astorian Kaitlyn Landwehr of Knappa puts up her best block against the Clatskanie Tigers Thursday. Huskies, Gulls tie at Broadway The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — Neither team shot the lights out — although the lights did go out — Thursday night at Seaside, in a nonleague boys soccer game between North Marion and Seaside. Despite a 1-1 tie, it was a step in the right direction for the Gulls, who lost to North Marion last year (8-0), and dropped a 10-1 decision to the Huskies in 2014. The Broadway Field lights went out in the first half, causing a 15 to 20-minute delay, before action resumed. After a 0-0 first half, North Marion scored early in the second half on a direct free kick (ball was passed back by a Seaside player to keeper Jesus Perez, who picked up the ball). The Gulls were able to tie the game midway through the second half, as Henry Chapman sent a free kick towards the net, where it was headed in by Hunter Thomp- son for Seaside’s lone goal. “It was a very physi- cal, scrappy game between two tough teams,” said Sea- side coach John Chapman, whose team hosts Stayton Tuesday.
