Local artist shares illustrations, insights on Astoria Y Christi Payne ou’ve seen her sketches in Friday Extra; this week The Daily Asto- rian is pleased to present the “Astoria Sketchbook” by Christi Payne. Drawn from the pages of her ongoing Traveling Sketchbook, the recurring panel will feature the sights, sounds and colors she delights in discovering around Astoria and beyond. “This town is rich with images and his- tory; it has captured my attention since the first time I saw it in 1975,” Payne said. “What I love about Astoria are those views that haven’t really changed that much — the Astor Hotel is no longer pink, but it still stands, and Chris’s News has given way to Street 14 Cafe, but the building retains its historic integrity. “We still have working gillnet boats ply- ing the Columbia — and I am hoping we can keep that tradition alive; Gimre’s sells shoes as it has for generations; and the Column con- tinues to shine over us all.” Payne, an artist, calligrapher and book designer, got her career start at The Daily Astorian in 1977 as a paste-up artist. She returned to Astoria in 2000 and immediately signed up for beginning drawing at Clatsop Community College with Royal Nebeker. You would have heard her say at that point in her life, “I can’t draw!” Now she likes to say, instead, “Anybody can draw if they have the desire. All you have to do is practice.” Payne formed a local drawing group — “Draw” — 10 years ago that is now a staple in many local artists’ schedules. We salute the hard working people of Clatsop County!
