5A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • MONDAY, AUGUST 22, 2016 WORLD IN BRIEF Associated Press Clinton refuses press access to fundraisers PROVINCETOWN, Mass. — It was a very busy, very lucrative weekend for Hillary Clinton in the summer playground of the East Coast’s moneyed elite. She brunched with wealthy backers at a sea- side estate in Nantucket, snacking on shrimp dumplings and crabcakes. A few hours later, she and her husband dined with an intimate party of thirty at a secluded Martha’s Vineyard estate. And on Sunday afternoon, she joined the singer Cher at a “LGBT summer celebration” on the far reaches of Cape Cod. By Sunday evening, Clinton had spoken to more than 2,200 campaign donors. But what she told the crowds remains a mystery. Clinton has refused to open her fundrais- ers to journalists, reversing nearly a decade of greater transparency in presidential campaigns and leaving the public guessing at what she’s saying to some of her most powerful supporters. It’s an approach that differs from the Demo- cratic president she hopes to succeed. Since his 2008 campaign, President Barack Obama has allowed reporters traveling with him into the backyards and homes of wealthy donors to wit- ness his some of his remarks. Olympics headed for Asian venues seen as safe BEIJING — For the Olympics, it’s so-long Rio, hello Asia. The next three Olympics are headed for rela- tively calmer ports of call in South Korea, Japan and China following the organizational drama surrounding the 2014 Winter Olympics in Rus- sia and the just completed Summer Games in Brazil, although challenges remain, especially when it comes to inances and generating enthu- siasm among home audiences. A look ahead to the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics and the 2022 Beijing Winter Games. All three coun- tries have hosted the Olympics before and enjoy a shared reputation for prosperity and a deft hand at organizing major events. There was no immediate response from Moscow. Last week, Russia announced it used the air- ield some 50 kilometers (31 miles) north of the Iranian city of Hamedan. Iranian oficials only conirmed Russia’s presence a day later. S. Korea, US start drills despite N. Korea’s threat Obama’s vacation glow may fade fast WASHINGTON — After two weeks of sun- shine and 10 rounds of golf, President Barack Obama is preparing for the busy fall awaiting him. The glow from his vacation on the Massa- chusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard may fade sooner than expected, though. Obama gets back on the road Tuesday to comfort residents of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a city hard-hit in recent weeks by natural and man-made tragedies. Heavy looding this month killed at least 13 people and displaced thousands more after murky water engulfed their homes. In July, the fatal police shooting of a black man outside of a convenience store sparked pro- tests and mass arrests. Police say the death of 37-year-old Alton Sterling apparently led a gun- man to train his weapon on law enforcement oficers, killing three. Iran chastises Russia for touting use of bases TEHRAN, Iran — Iran’s defense minis- ter criticized Russia on Monday for having “kind of show-off and ungentlemanly” atti- tude for publicizing that it used an Iranian air base to launch airstrikes on Syria, the irst sign of government dissent over the unprecedented stationing of foreign troops in the Islamic Republic. The comments by Gen. Hossein Dehghan come after he chastised parliament this weekend for asking questions about Russia using the Sha- hid Nojeh Air Base to refuel its bombers strik- ing Syria. Such iery rhetoric by Pyongyang is not unusual. But the latest warning comes at a time of more tension following the defection of a senior North Korean diplomat and a U.S. plan to place a high-tech missile defense system in South Korea. The North’s military said in a statement Monday that it will turn Seoul and Washing- ton into “a heap of ashes through a Korean-style pre-emptive nuclear strike” if they show any signs of aggression toward the North’s territory. The North’s “irst-strike” units are ready to mount retaliatory attacks on South Korean and U.S. forces involved in the drills, according to the statement, carried by Pyongyang’s state media. South Korea’s Uniication Ministry expressed “strong” regret over the North’s warn- ing, saying the drills with the U.S. are defensive in nature. Seoul and Washington have repeat- edly said they have no intentions of invading Pyongyang.
