The fall leagues include: The “Monday Night League” Solo not bothered by ‘Zika’ crowd chants in Brazil By ROB HARRIS AP Global Soccer Writer RIO DE JANEIRO — The irst Olympics in Brazil are underway — aptly with soccer games in the sport’s spiritual home and a win for the hosts. In Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Stadium, the Brazilian wom- en’s team eased to a 3-0 victory at the start of its quest for a irst Olympic gold. It’s an early sporting high for Brazil, where reservations about the cost of bringing the Olympics to South America for the irst time have produced violent reactions. As the Olympic torch relay reached Rio, there were fresh signs that strife could disrupt the games. Police used tear gas to break up protests against salary delays for public workers. Other pro- testers are demanding improve- ments in education and health- care, with some angered by the 39.1 billion Brazilian reals ($12 billion) — a mix of public and private money — being spent on building venues and infra- structure for the Olympics. Brazil embarked on its Olympics bid at a time of pros- perity in 2006, but the games are opening with the country in the grip of its worst recession in decades. But there was a cause for celebrations on the football ield as headers from Mon- ica and Cristiane either side of Andressa Alves’ 59th-minute strike secured Brazil’s opening win over China. The Olympic Stadium was fuller than earlier in the day when Sweden beat South Africa 1-0 in the other Group E game but the majority of seats did not appear to be illed. — 33 weeks, beginning Sept. 12. Tuesday Night League includes 21 weeks of bowl- ing, beginning Sept. 13. Wednesday Night League begins Sept. 14. Gearhart Bowl’s new “Thursday Night Footbowl League” begins Sept. 8. In a new scoring format, the only scores that count are Strikes (touchdowns), worth seven points; and Spares (ield goals), worth three points. Gearhart Bowl’s big screens will be showing Thursday Night Football during league play. Tee off for a good cause The Daily Astorian It will be a day of golf and fun at the Seaside Golf Club, Sept. 24, in the irst annual Sunset Park and Recreation Golf Tournament. The event will beneit the organization’s foundation’s scholarships that support “access to positive life activ- ities for children, youth and adults” in the South County. There will be prizes and con- tests throughout the tourna- ment, with food and bever- ages available for purchase. Family and friends are welcome. AP Photo/Eugenio Savio U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo holds the ball during a women’s Olympic soccer match at the Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, Wednesday. Solo says she was not bothered by fans who chanted “Zika, Zika” at her as the U.S. team defeated New Zealand, 2-0, in its Olympic debut. The crowd jeered the goalkeeper with the reference to the virus that has scared many athletes ahead of the Rio Games. The stadium is also known as Joao Havelange Stadium, named after the 100-year-old Brazilian who led soccer’s gov- erning body FIFA for 24 years. Havelange stepped down as honorary president of FIFA in 2013 to avoid possible suspen- sion for taking kickbacks. At the Mineirao Stadium in Belo Horizonte, site of Brazil’s humiliating 7-1 loss to Ger- many in the World Cup semi- inal two years ago, the U.S. women’s team opened its bid for a fourth straight gold medal with a 2-0 win over New Zea- land. Near the end of the game, local fans chanted “Zika, Zika” at American goalkeeper Hope Solo, who before coming to the Olympics upset some Bra- zilians by tweeting a photo of herself wearing a hat with mos- quito netting in a reference to the virus. In the inal game of the day in Belo Horizonte, France cruised past Colombia 4-0 to take the group lead over the Americans. The soccer in Sao Paulo saw a piece of Olympic history cre- ated by Canada. Janine Beckie took only 20 seconds to make a mark on her third Summer Games by scoring the fastest goal ever at the Olympics in a 2-0 win over Australia. It was nine seconds faster than Oribe Peralta’s strike for Mexico in the men’s gold medal match against Brazil four years ago in London. Canada had to cope from the 19th minute with only 10 women after Shelina Zadorsky was sent off for dragging down Michelle Heyman on her way to goal. But Canada still pre- vented Australia from equaliz- ing and captain Christine Sin- clair added a second in the 78th. In Sao Paulo, Melanie Beh- ringer scored a pair of goals as three-time bronze medal- ist Germany routed newcomer Zimbabwe 6-1. The men’s soccer compe- tition starts with eight games Thursday, with Brazil play- ing South Africa in the capital Brasilia. The golf tournament will be a four-person, 18-hole shotgun-style tournament. Tee-off time is 9 a.m. Regis- tration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Seaside Golf Course, 451 Avenue U. Tickets are $100 per per- son. Carts are limited and are available on a irst-come, irst-served basis. E-mail sunsetparksan- drecfoundation@gmail.com to sign up and select a tee time. Cash and checks are both accepted. Checks can be made out to Sunset Park and Recreation Foundation. Respond by Aug. 31. Trio of solo homers enough as Mariners beat Red Sox Associated Press SEATTLE — Rick Por- cello went nearly three months without a loss. A trio of swings from Nelson Cruz, Mike Zunino and Adam Lind were enough to bring that long winning streak to an end. Cruz, Zunino and Lind all hit solo home runs, Hisashi Iwakuma threw 7 1/3 shutout innings and the Seattle Mari- ners beat the Boston Red Sox 3-1 on Wednesday night. Seattle handed Porcello (14-3) his irst loss since May 17, snapping a streak of eight straight wins by the Boston right-hander.
