Mookie Betts homered off Cishek to lead off the ninth inning, Craig Kimbrel got his 18th save in his return from knee surgery and the Boston Red Sox beat James Paxton and the Mar- iners 2-1 on Monday night. Paxton held Boston to a run and four hits over eight innings before Betts hit his 22nd homer off Cishek (2-6), who blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning Sunday in a 7-6 loss to the Cubs. “Obviously, Steve has strug- gled the last couple times out. We probably need to look where we’re headed— in the short- term anyway — to get him back on track,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. He allowed a walk, and Kyle Seager reached on a third-strike wild pitch, but Kimbrel got two other strikeouts to end it. “That’s my job,” Kimbrel said. “I like save situations. It worked out nice.” Aaron Hill homered off Pax- ton in the eighth to tie the game 1-1. Junichi Tazawa (2-1) got the win with a scoreless eighth after Eduardo Rodriguez held Seattle to a run and three hits over 6 1/3 innings. Rodriguez held the Mariners to three baserunners in the irst six innings, and only one of his irst 19 outs even left the inield. Paxton retired the irst seven batters until Sandy Leon’s one- out single in the third. Hanley Ramirez singled in the ifth and Betts was the irst player to reach second with a two-out double in the sixth. All failed to advance. Dae-Ho Lee’s run-scoring double with one out in the sev- enth chased Rodriguez, who allowed three hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Robbie Ross Jr. took over and hit Seager with a pitch to load the bases with one out. He then struck out Franklin Gutierrez and Chris Iannetta. Paxton had six strikeouts and no walks. Deal ’em up! 18 trades — Beltran, Lucroy, Bruce, Moore move By BEN WALKER AP Baseball Writer Jonathan Lucroy got a deal he liked, Carlos Beltran joined him in Texas and Jay Bruce and Rich Hill also moved Monday during an 18-swap frenzy at the trade deadline. Matt Moore, Francisco Liriano and Joe Smith found new homes, too, as playoff contenders stocked up for the stretch. “That’s what we play for. Those are the moments we want to be in,” Moore said after NL West-leading San Francisco got the lefty from last-place Tampa Bay. “For someone to reach out and come get me, it’s a really good feeling.” Monday was the busiest deadline day since at least 1995, eclipsing the 15 deals made on the inal day for non-waiver trades in 2010 and 2015, accord- ing to Major League Baseball. Teams had until 4 p.m. EDT to make trades without waiv- ers. From now, no player can be dealt unless he goes unclaimed by everyone else. The AL West-leading Rang- ers made two major moves. After Lucroy used his lim- ited no-trade clause to block a deal to Cleveland, the All-Star catcher was sent to Texas. “Now, moving on to the (at) Rangers let’s take this bad boy to the ’ship! Really excited and can’t wait to get after it!” he posted on Twitter. The 30-year-old Lucroy is batting .299 with 13 homers and 50 RBIs this season. Texas also got Beltran, a proven postseason star, from the New York Yankees for righty Dillon Tate, the fourth over- all pick in the 2015 amateur draft, and two other pitching prospects. “I think as a player, you know that this moment could happen. But when it happens, it hits you,” Beltran said. Twice before in his career, Beltran was traded in midseason to a team with playoff hopes. Like the Rangers, Beltran has been to the World Series but never won the crown. The Yankees kept rework- ing their roster, trying to turn the best parts of a .500 team into a bright future. They had already traded relief aces Aroldis Chap- man and Andrew Miller leading up to the deadline. “We’re kind of in unfamiliar territory with the Yankees,” irst baseman Mark Teixeira said. “That’s life. I mean, we’ve had a nice run the last eight years,” he said. As always, relievers were in demand. The Giants aimed to bolster a shaky bullpen by getting Will Smith from Milwaukee, Boston got Fernando Abad from Min- nesota and the NL Central-lead- ing Cubs obtained sidearm- ing righty Joe Smith from the Angels. RENTON, Wash. — After a contentious holdout last year that extended two weeks into the regular sea- son, Seahawks safety Kam Chancellor is enjoying foot- ball again. Chancellor is smiling and joking with teammates again. It’s an aspect of Chancellor’s personality that wasn’t often on display after he returned to the team last season. “The presence and the atmosphere is amazing,” cor- nerback DeShawn Shead said of having Chancellor with the team this year in training camp. “Everybody is here. That leadership and the brotherhood is connected. You don’t feel no missing links.” Chancellor missed the irst two games of 2015 as the Seahawks went 0-2 with- out him. However, Chan- cellor’s holdout resulted in nothing gained for the star safety and a massive amount of ines for the missed time. He returned to the team and played in 11 regular-sea- son games. An injured tail- bone kept him out for three weeks in December. But despite not getting the new contract he desired, Chancel- lor has managed to turn the page on the contractual front and focus once again on his teammates. “Just getting back to where we left off,” Chan- cellor said. “We want to get back to being at the top of the division, the conference and getting that ring again. That’s the main focal point and you can’t do that unless you’re focusing on each other.” The Seahawks tried to go about their business without letting Chancellor’s absence become a distraction. How- ever, it clearly had an effect on the team, both on the ield and in the locker room. “When he’s here and he’s around, he affects other peo- ple,” head coach Pete Car- roll said. “His toughness, his mentality, his words, his leadership is just exem- plary. On Day 2, Chancellor watched the offense beat them on a roll- out for a big gain. When the offense ran the same play again later in practice, Chan- cellor read what was coming and jumped the route to force an incompletion on a pass to Doug Baldwin. Chancellor then quickly got in Baldwin’s face, enthusi- astically celebrating while tell- ing Baldwin they couldn’t beat him with the same play twice. It’s the type of carefree per- sona that Chancellor seemed to be lacking upon returning to the team last season. “That’s what broth- ers do, you go out there and you have fun,” Chancellor said. “Whether it’s exchang- ing words, hitting each other. It’s like boys growing up. You want to beat up on your brother a little bit but it’s all in fun. That’s just tough love and you want to spread that tough love among the group.” Chancellor characterized his 2015 as “up and down,” which could easily describe the Seahawks’ season as a whole. After a 2-4 start to the year, Seattle won eight of their inal 10 games to earn a wild card spot. In the divi- sional round, Seattle fell into a 31-0 hole to the Carolina Panthers before scoring 24 straight points to nearly over- come the deicit. Now everything feels nor- mal again. Everyone reported for camp on time and the Sea- hawks feel strongly about the roster they’ve constructed. “It feels like the (Super Bowl) 48 year,” Chancellor said. “It feels like everybody is bringing that intensity, everybody is out to prove something. They may be or may not be, but it just feels that way. The brotherhood is getting even tighter.
