ELECTION 2016 THE DAILY ASTORIAN • MONDAY, JULY 25, 2016 5A Dems’ division roils party on Day 1 of convention By KEN THOMAS and KATHLEEN HENNESSEY Associated Press PHILADELPHIA — Angry Democrats heckled outgoing party chief Debbie Wasserman Schultz with boos and cries of “shame!” on Monday as the party tried to recover from an embarrassing email hack that ripped open primary wounds just hours before they planned to mount a four-day showcase of unity. Hours before she was to gavel in the Democratic National Convention, the Flor- ida congresswoman was met by raucous activists who accused her of favoring Hillary Clin- ton over vanquished rival Ber- nie Sanders. Activists jeered and waved signs reading “Thanks for the ‘help,’ Debbie,” and more simply, “E-mail.” Her supporters shouted them down, as Wasserman Schultz appealed for comity. “We have to make sure that we move together in a uniied way!” she said. For Democrats who spent last week throwing stones at Republicans’ troubled conven- tion in Cleveland, the scene was a painful reminder of their own glass house. On the eve of the four-day spectacle, the 19,000 hacked emails pub- lished by WikiLeaks appeared to show top oficials at the sup- posedly neutral Democratic National Committee working to tip the scales toward Clin- ton, even suggesting reporters should question Sanders’ faith. The FBI issued a statement Monday saying it is investigat- ing the hack. “A compromise of this nature is something we take very seri- ously, and the FBI will continue to investigate and hold account- able those who pose a threat in cyberspace,” it said. Clinton campaign oficials pointed the inger for the hack at Russian military intelligence agencies. They accused Rus- sia of trying to meddle in the U.S. election and favoring GOP nominee Donald Trump. “We don’t have informa- tion right now about that, but what we have is a kind of bro- mance going on between Vlad- imir Putin and Trump which is distinct from this leak,” Clinton adviser John Podesta said in an MSNBC interview. Trump dismissed the sug- gestion in a tweet: “The joke in town is that Russia leaked the disastrous DNC emails, which should never have been writ- ten (stupid), because Putin likes me.” It wasn’t immediately clear how WikiLeaks received cop- ies of the internal Democratic emails. Party oficials learned in late April that their systems had been attacked after they discov- ered malicious software on their computers. A cybersecurity irm they employed found traces of at least two sophisticated hack- ing groups on their network — both of which have ties to the Russian government. Those hackers took at least a year’s worth of detailed chats, emails and research on Trump, accord- ing to a person knowledge- able of the breach who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the matter. Kaine liberal appeal muted by energy ties, abortion concerns By STEPHEN BRAUN and EILEEN SULLIVAN Associated Press WASHINGTON — Hillary Clinton and running mate Tim Kaine are closely aligned on many issues, but Kaine’s cau- tious, left-leaning political pro- ile in a closely contested state is blurred by his ties to energy industry interests and his per- sonal qualms over abortion. The Virginia senator is regarded as a careful, ear- nest politician who has navi- gated the rough-and-tumble of his state’s hard-fought electoral landscape with few ethical mis- steps. Minor controversies have lared over paid travel and gifts he received during his stints as governor and senator. A Harvard-trained lawyer who prospered as Richmond’s mayor before moving on to higher ofice, Kaine endorsed Clinton early in her presidential run, in contrast to 2008 when he backed Barack Obama over Clinton early on. In sync on a number of issues, Kaine and Clinton back a no-ly zone over Syria despite the Obama administration’s reluctance. Kaine, who was governor when a gunman with a history of mental illness fatally shot 32 people at Virginia Tech before killing himself, shares Clinton’s support for gun control. He sup- ports restricting the sale of mag- azines carrying more than 10 bullets; Clinton wants to ban military-style guns she calls “weapons of war.” Both share concerns on edu- cation, health care and a tax overhaul. Offshore oil Clinton came out against offshore oil drilling while cam- paigning in 2015 and expressed approval this year when Pres- ident Barack Obama blocked all exploration off the Eastern Seaboard in the Atlantic Ocean. Kaine consistently has spon- sored legislation that would have opened Virginia’s coast to drilling. As governor, Kaine said in 2008: “We’re not going to drill our way out of the long-term energy crisis facing this nation.” But in 2013, he and Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., sponsored legis- lation that would have set a ive- year leasing plan allowing oil drilling off Virginia’s coast and providing at least 35 percent of revenues to the state. In 2015, Kaine again joined Warner and a group of East Coast senators pushing an offshore drilling plan. Oil and gas interests rank with law irms and investment and technology companies among Kaine’s strong campaign inanciers. Dominion donated more than $250,000 to Kaine’s state- wide political campaigns and inaugurations between 2001 and 2008, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, a nonpar- tisan open government group. Some state environmental- ists said Kaine, as governor, helped undermine clean-coal and other anti-pollution efforts in Virginia. Vivian Elizabeth Thomson, a University of Vir- ginia professor who served on the state’s Air Pollution Con- trol Board under Kaine, said his administration undercut their efforts to impose tough stan- dards on a coal-ired Dominion power plant in Wise, Virginia. David Botkins, a Domin- ion spokesman, said Kaine “has supported the development of affordable, cleaner energy sources in Virginia and through- out the United States.” Leaders of two national envi- ronmental groups, the League of Conservation Voters and the Sierra Club, voiced approval of Clinton’s choice of Kaine, who backs Obama on climate change and opposed construction of the Keystone XL pipeline. Tiernan Sittenfeld, an ofi- cial with the league’s political action fund, said Kaine had an “impressive” record of support for the group’s issues. League members were also among Kaine’s top funders in his 2012 Senate election. Reproductive rights Clinton and Kaine are avowed champions of women’s repro- ductive rights. But as a self-de- scribed “traditional Catholic,” Kaine has long said he person- ally opposes abortion, a stance that drew criticism from wom- en’s groups. His personal qualms could cause complications later in the campaign when he debates Republican rival Mike Pence, an anti-abortion crusader. During his 2005 race for governor, Kaine said he would promote adoption and absti- nence education — programs long stressed by anti-abortion forces. Once in ofice, he infu- riated Planned Parenthood and other reproductive rights groups by allowing the sale of “Choose Life” license plates. Portions of proceeds went to pregnancy centers and adoption programs. Since 2012, Kaine has had a 100 percent voting record from NARAL Pro-Choice Amer- ica, a political group opposing restrictions on abortion. In an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Kaine acknowledged the public contortion of his stance even as he was being consid- ered by the Clinton campaign as a possible running mate. “I’ve got a personal feeling about abortion, but the right role for government is to let women make their own decisions,” Kaine said. Despite their occasional pol- icy discordancy, Kaine and Clin- ton have hired some of the same staffers in recent years. Kaine’s Senate chief of staff, Mike Henry, was deputy campaign manager for Clinton’s 2008 pres- idential run. Kaine’s most recent Sen- ate inancial disclosure shows that his net worth is between $647,000 and $1.9 mil- lion. Between $130,000 and $300,000 of his investments, listed as owned by one of his children, are in energy corpora- tions, among them Duke Energy Corp., Chevron Corp. and Exxon Mobil Corp. In June, Kaine acknowl- edged he failed to disclose that his stay at a Spanish resort was paid by a nonproit tied to a lob- bying irm. Kaine had helped organize and attended a confer- ence in September 2014 hosted by the U.S.-Spain Council, a group that works to cement political and business ties between the two nations. Kaine, who is the nonproit’s honorary chairman, later told The Associated Press that Sen- ate ethics staffers advised his own staff that the council should cover his costs. As governor, Kaine accepted more than $160,000 in gifts and paid travel, according to state reports. The gifts were legal under the state’s permissive eth- ics rules, but his willingness to accept them could become an issue during the presidential campaign. Among those gifts was $2,000 in travel paid by Domin- ion for meetings of two national governors’ conferences and to watch George Mason Universi- ty’s basketball team play in the NCAA Final Four in 2006.
