SPORTS 4A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22, 2016 Old school rivals split doubleheader By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian WARRENTON — The Knappa and Warrenton Junior State teams managed to squeeze in two games in 4 1/2 hours of baseball Tues- day afternoon at Huddleston Field, and both left with a victory. Facing an all-state pitcher in Game 1, the Warriors overcame seven errors and stunned the Loggers 7-6, before Knappa bounced back with 23 runs in five at-bats in Game 2, for a 23-2 win, resulting in a doubleheader split for the old school rivals. Granted, the Loggers were missing a few regu- lars from their lineup in the opener; and granted, War- renton was using a pitcher not from Warrenton. Still, the Warriors did what they had to do to hold off the Loggers in Game 1. Warrior starter Zac Tapio, from Ilwaco High School, allowed just two hits and finished with nine strikeouts and five walks to pick up the win. Knappa scored two runs in the top of the first on three walks and two errors, but Warrenton answered with a run in the bottom of the first (Dalton Knight scoring on a single by Derek Ham), and four runs in the second. Devin Jackson had a two- run single to left to highlight Warrenton’s big inning, as the Warriors held a 7-2 lead through six innings. Tapio retired the Loggers in order in the fifth and sixth innings, before Knappa ral- lied in the top of the seventh. Cody Stuhr had the Log- gers’ only hit of the inning, as Knappa took advantage of three Warrior errors. With runners at second and third and two outs, Tapio got Colton Weirup to fly out to left field to end the game. Warrenton commit- ted seven errors, while the Loggers stranded 10 base runners. Among others, the Log- gers were missing Reuben Cruz, Andrew Goozee and Jason Miller. Still, Knappa did not miss their regulars in Game 2, in which the Log- gers pounded out 16 hits and scored in every at-bat. That included a 13-run fourth inning, while the Warriors committed another seven errors. Weirup started on the mound and threw four solid innings, allowing just one hit with eight strikeouts and four walks. Stuhr drove in five runs (three on a bases-loaded double), while Ty Vander- burg had three singles, Shaun Lackey had three RBIs, and David Patterson drove in two runs on two hits. Dale Takalo played all of Game 2, after missing most of Game 1. He had an RBI triple in the second inning, and scored twice in Knap- pa’s 13-run inning. “Both teams were miss- ing some kids, so it gave us both an opportunity to see what some others could do,” said Warrenton coach Lennie Wolfe. “And I was happy with the Warrenton kids. We ran the bases well and we were aggressive in Game 1.
