The Hope Garden celebrates 10 years The Daily Astorian Hope Garden, the first Community Garden Asso- ciation garden established in Clatsop County, is cel- ebrating its 10th anniver- sary. A lawn area at First Lutheran Church was turned into a garden that has 12 plots in raised beds, and 12 neighbors or ten- ants have signed on to the association’s rules of sus- tainability and kindness toward their fellow garden- ers. Each gardener contrib- utes $20 to the association for its management of the program. In July 2007, 30 camp- ers from Camp Lutherwood at First Lutheran Church assisted with the planting of the “three sisters” (corn, beans and squash). That experience created a lasting impression on the children, and the church has contin- ued to provide not only the property, but also water to sustain the garden. The gar- den brings many neighbors together growing foods and herbs close to their homes. Church members also grow foods and herbs for their group functions and ministries. Information about the garden is available from Phyllis Taylor, garden coor- dinator, at the church ofice at 725 33rd St. or 503-325- 6252, or at www.clatsop- communitygardens.org The most valuable and respected source of local news, advertising and information for our communities. www.eomediagroup.com Al-Anon Family Groups in- formation line for Clatsop and Til- lamook counties, 503-338-5688.
