7A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, JUNE 14, 2016 Summer baseball in full swing Grads: 100th class of Gulls By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian The summer baseball schedule — already under- way at the All-Stars level — kicks into full gear this week with the Junior State (17-and-under) teams. Astoria Ford is sched- uled to play a doubleheader at Clatskanie at 5 p.m. today, with Clatskanie visiting Asto- ria for a twinbill Thursday at Aiken Field, also at 5 p.m. Warrenton is scheduled to play a single game Thursday at Neah-Kah-Nie (6 p.m.), while the Warriors’ contest Monday vs. Knappa was postponed. For the Astoria Ford sum- mer program, some of the bigger games take place later this month and next, when Astoria hosts a number of weekend tournaments with visitors from the Willamette Valley. The Fishermen invite Dallas for a doubleheader Saturday, July 2, and a single game Sunday, July 3. Astoria Ford will also host teams from Madison and West Salem July 8-10 for three to four games at Aiken Field. Astoria wraps up the home season with a “Townball Tournament,” July 22-24, with schedule of teams and Continued from Page 1A SCOREBOARD SPORTS SCHEDULE TODAY Junior State Baseball — Astoria at Clatskanie (2), 5 p.m. THURSDAY Junior State Baseball — Clatskanie at Astoria (2), 5 p.m.; War- renton at Neah-Kah-Nie, 6 p.m. SATURDAY Junior State Baseball — St. Helens at Astoria (2), 1 p.m.; Neah- Kah-Nie at Warrenton (2), Noon times to be announced. “We’re going to have six eighth graders and six or seven ninth graders,” said Astoria coach Dave Gas- ser, of this summer’s Asto- ria Ford team. “Between the incoming freshmen, soph- omores and juniors, we’ll have a roster of 21 or 22 kids, and we’ll just play our entire schedule with that number. Some of the games will have a younger inluence, others will have an older inluence, and we’ll just play. “It’s almost like spring training, with a split-squad approach. We’ll just try to play as much ball as we pos- sibly can in six weeks.” Gasser said the July 2-3 weekend will feature “not only us playing Dallas three times, but we’re going to have alumni show up and play as well,” he said. “It’s an alumni opportunity, and based on how much inter- est we have, we’ll organize a couple teams, and have an all-Astoria alumni/pres- ent-day players tournament at the end of the season.” Meanwhile, it will be a mix-and-match coaching staff for the Astoria program this summer. “The guy who will be coaching the brunt of the schedule is Lance Stevens,” Gasser said. “He’s a very knowledgeable guy who has played a lot of ball. He played for a Salem Legion Club, Cooke’s, back in the day. “He has a really good baseball background, and assisting him will be the rest of the staff. Ralph (Steinback) will work with the pitchers … Brian Babbitt, Ryker Thorn- ton, Glen Fromwiller and myself,” with a few ex-As- toria players helping out, including Cody Fox, Nick Scott and Nick Strange. front of our students and yet here they all are.” Roley thanked families, “the most important educa- tors,” and the community. Students expressed gratitude to faculty and staff. “We push our limits because we are the Sea- side centennials and we are grateful for those who molded us into who we are today,” salutatorian Whit- ney Westerholm said. “You are the reason behind the success of our class, and we will forever be in debt to this community.” After the awarding of diplomas, students popped confetti and threw hats in the air as family and faculty proudly clapped, whistled and cheered. Lively school band and chamber choir music punc- tuated speeches, as well as a slide show of seniors now and as babies, prompt- ing many “awws” from the audience. Graduating seniors relected on memories and expressed gratitude for the close-knit community, while encouraging fellow students to welcome new experiences. “We immersed ourselves in sports, clubs, homecom- ing weeks, spirit weeks and Danny Miller / The Daily Astorian Seaside High School students wait for their graduation ceremony to begin Monday. lots and lots of schoolwork,” creating “a lifetime of mem- ories,” valedictorian Annuka Brown said. Senior class president and valedictorian Alie Zagata, who created the Seaside High School centennial cel- ebration, asked her fellow students to hold onto their unique personalities as they enter the “big, wide world.” She quoted Dr. Seuss: “Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive that is you-er than you.” She described her class as “introverts and extroverts, dancers and musicians, read- ers and actors and adven- turers — colorful, faithful, free-thinking young adults with the world at our inger- tips. It is my hope that each one of you with each of your irreplaceable and interesting personalities goes out in the world and not only survives, but thrives.” Westerholm, the daughter of two Seaside High School graduates, said home is the beginning of a journey. “Like most of us up here, I’ve been calling this place home since before I was born,” she said. “Some say it takes a village to raise a child, and there is no truer testament to that than each and every class that has come through this school. We are the graduates of Sea- side High School, a direct product of the beautiful community that raised us.” THE DAILY ASTORIAN CLA SSIFIED IN DEX P.O .
