SPORTS THE DAILY ASTORIAN • THURSDAY, MAY 12, 2016 HOMETOWN REPORT Former Gulls lying high at collegiate level By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian McMINNVILLE — Sea- side High School graduate Kelly Willyard — now in her freshman year of track at Northwest Christian Uni- versity in Eugene — broke the NCU school record in the 100 meters last Satur- day in the Linield Open at McMinnville. In the process, she qual- iied for the Cascade Colle- giate Championships, Friday and Saturday in Hermiston. Willyard ran the 100 in 13.11 seconds to inish ahead of the former record-holder, teammate Myranda Johnson. Willyard’s time placed her 20th in Saturday’s heats of the 100. The best time was an amazing 11.70 by Jamie Ashcroft of Alaska-Anchor- age. Ashcroft also won the 200 meters in 24.83. Willyard placed 17th overall in 27.37. Seaside’s Josh Chestnut, also a member of the NCU track team, was eighth in the men’s long jump, as the for- mer Gull soared 19 feet, 8 inches. He also had the 19th best time in the 100 (11.54). In the same meet, Knappa graduate Steve Allen, a soph- omore at Paciic University, was ninth in the 5,000 meters (16:38.38), just ahead of brother Mike Allen (16:40.34). Knappa’s Kate Shear, competing unattached, took third in the javelin (out of 28 competitors) with a toss of 137 feet, 9 inches. In other “Hometown Heroes” news, Seaside’s Alli- son Kilday, a freshman at Occidental College in Los Angeles, helped the Tigers’ women’s track team inish sec- ond in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Confer- ence Championships, Occiden- tal’s highest inish since 1999. A member of the Tigers’ 1,600-meter relay team, Kil- day helped the foursome Courtesy of Northwest Christian University Seaside High School graduate Kelly Willyard, compet- ing here in the relay, set a Northwest Christian Universi- ty school record in the 100 meters last Saturday. 7A Splash Brothers Curry, Thompson send Golden State to West inals By JANIE MCCAULEY AP Sports Writer OAKLAND, Calif. — Ste- phen Curry raised his left arm in triumph and cradled the game ball in his right as yellow con- fetti fell. The Splash Brothers are tak- ing defending champion Golden State back to the Western Con- ference inals for a second straight year. Klay Thompson’s sweet shooting touch carried the War- riors while Curry was down, and together again in the starting lineup they guided Golden State another step closer to a repeat title with a 125-121 win over the Portland Trail Blazers in Game 5 on Wednesday night. Thompson scored 33 points with six 3-pointers, while Curry added 29 and sealed it with a 3 with 24.9 seconds left. He in- ished with ive 3s a day after becoming the irst unanimous MVP in NBA history, also add- ing 11 assists after returning to the starting lineup for the irst time all series because of a knee injury. “West inals two years in a row, it’s been a special, special season,” Thompson said. Draymond Green, who had his left ankle retaped in the fourth quarter, had 13 points, 11 rebounds and six assists AP Photo/Marcio Jose Sanchez Golden State Warriors’ Stephen Curry (30) celebrates after scoring against the Portland Trail Blazers during the first half in Game 5 of a second-round NBA basketball playoff series Wednesday, in Oakland, Calif. after guaranteeing Golden State would advance from this game. Damian Lillard scored 28 points and CJ McCollum had 27 for the young Trail Blazers, who overcame an 0-2 deicit to the Clippers in the irst round to get this far. The Warriors got past Port- land even with Curry missing the irst three games as he recov- ered from a sprained right knee. “We know what it takes to win in the playoffs,” Thompson said. “That might be the closest ive-game series of all-time.” Now, Golden State will wait for the conclusion of the Okla- homa City-San Antonio series, led 3-2 by the Thunder. And the banged-up Warriors could use the time to get healthy. They lost 7-foot center Andrew Bogut for the second half because of a right leg injury. Thompson shot 13 for 17 and became the irst player to have at least ive 3s in seven straight games, also recording his fourth 30-point game this postseason. “Klay’s shooting was incred- ible tonight,” Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. “Then the way Steph inished the game, that step-back shot to put it to a ive- point lead was probably a shot only he can make. So I thought a gutty effort from a lot of guys. It wasn’t our best stuff, but we got it done.” SCOREBOARD PREP SCHEDULE Submitted Photo Allison Kilday, wearing the ‘O’ has had a big season for the Occidental College track team. of Charlotte Cullip, Isa- belle Dunne, Onyekachi Nwabueze and Kilday inish 10th in 3:56.38, clinching the second-place team inish. Kilday’s time of 65.14 was good enough for seventh in the 400-meter hurdles.
