THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 2016 SPORTS 5A Gulls’ golf season comes to a close The Daily Astorian HILLSBORO — The Sea- side boys golf team picked a bad day to shoot their worst score since early March. In Tuesday’s inal round of the Special District 1 Regional at the Meriwether Golf Club in Hillsboro, the Gulls strug- gled while Scappoose and Valley Catholic shot their season best scores to over- take Seaside in the inal team standings. Scappoose inished with a two-day total 691 to win the team title, jumping over Crook County, second with a 693. Valley Catholic inished third at 705, just three strokes ahead of Seaside (708) — all of which leaves the two-time defending state champion Gulls out of the state tourna- ment for the irst time since 2007. “We managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of vic- tory today,” said Seaside coach Jim Poetsch. “We were talking about what we needed to do to win this tournament, and six hours later our season was over. “I’ve got to hand it to Scap- poose and Valley Catholic,” he said. “They went out and put up good numbers, and we were unable to hold on to the lead we had after the irst day.” Still, Poetsch said of Sea- side’s Cinderella season, “After losing four seniors from SCOREBOARD PREP SCHEDULE TODAY Baseball — Astoria at Seaside, 5 p.m. THURSDAY Softball — Yamhill-Carlton at Asto- ria, 4:30 p.m. Track — Cowapa Championships, at St. Helens HS, 3:30 p.m. BASEBALL Knappa 13, Vernonia 0 Vernonia 000 00—0 1 5 Knappa 004 9x—13 9 0 Elliott, Mullikin (4), Butcher (4) and Everett; Takalo and Goozee. Help ‘Stamp Out Hunger’ Saturday The Daily Astorian Join the Clatsop Com- munity Action Regional Food Bank Network and letter carriers on Saturday to Stamp Out Hunger, one of the largest single-day food drives in the coun- try. All donated food col- lected in Clatsop County stays in Clatsop County, in the community where it was collected. Anyone can take part. Simply collect nonperish- able food items and leave them in a bag near the mail- box on Saturday. A letter carrier or volunteer will pick up the donation and ensure it gets to a local food pantry. The goal this year is to raise 12,000 pounds in Clatsop County; and 1.3 million pounds throughout Oregon and Clark County, Washington. Since 2008, the collaborative efforts of the CCA network and the mail carriers have collected 99,659 pounds of food to ight hunger in Clatsop County. The most wanted foods include: shelf-stable milk; high protein food, such as canned meats and canned or dried beans; nutrient rich foods, such as canned fruits and vegetables (pref- erably with reduced sugar/ sodium); whole-grain items such as brown rice, whole grain cereal and whole wheat pasta; soups, chil- ies and stews (preferably with reduced sodium/fat); 100 percent fruit or vege- table juice (canned, plastic or boxed); and unsaturated cooking oils. Unacceptable items include rusty or unlabeled cans, glass containers, per- ishable items, homemade items, noncommercial packaged items, alcoholic beverages, mixes or soda, and open or used items. Donations not picked up by letter carriers can be dropped off at any post ofice by May 18. Astoria Ford calls for peanut butter for kids The Daily Astorian Astoria Ford, in conjunction with the Ford Focus on Hun- ger, is joining other Ford deal- ers throughout the Northwest to collect jars of peanut butter sup- porting the summer demand for kid-friendly foods at Clatsop Community Action Regional Food Bank. The peanut butter drive, which runs from Saturday through May 21, is in response to the increased demand for this protein staple during the sum- mer months, when many chil- dren lose access to school nutri- tion programs. It is estimated that nearly 24 percent of chil- dren are unsure how their next meal will be provided, and when school is out during the summer months, local food banks carry a larger responsibility to feed kids. To donate, bring jars of pea- nut butter to Astoria Ford, 710 W. Marine Drive, between the hours of 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mari- ners fans attending the Saturday game may bring their peanut butter donations to Safeco Field, and Portland Timbers fans can bring peanut butter to the Sun- day match at Providence Park. Last year’s drive collected nearly 30,000 pounds of pea- nut butter, feeding kids through- out the summer. Those unable to donate in person can also give online at www.fordfeedskids. org. Understanding pain class offered Friday The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — A pain educa- tion class, “Understanding Pain: With Knowledge Comes Power,” is 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Friday at Providence Seaside Hospital, Education Center A, 725 S. There is no charge for the class, but reservations are required by calling the Resource Line at 800-562-8964 or by registering online at www.providence.org/ classes Vernonia clinches league title KNAPPA — Vernonia clinched the Northwest League softball title with a 15-2 win at Knappa Tuesday.
