Alameda AYenue closing for repairs The Daily Astorian Astoria Public Works is closing Alameda AYenue between Hull and ,lwaco streets Mon- day and Tuesday while replacing a guardrail . /ocal artists inYited to work with recycled material Astoria Visual Arts and Recology Western Oregon haYe created the Coastal Ore- gon Artist Residency, which will proYide local artists the chance to make pieces from recycled, repurposed and dis- carded materials recoYered from the Astoria Recycling Depot and Transfer Station. The project is meant to encourage people to conserYe natural resources and promote new ways of thinking about art and the enYironment. (ach three-month resi- dency will proYide access to discarded materials, a stipend of $400 per month and a large studio space at the recycling center. During their residen- cies, artists will haYe week- day scaYenging priYileges and access to the studio. Astoria Visual Arts and Recology Western will host a reception and public exhibi- tion featuring artwork made during their residencies. When they end, each artist will be asked to contribute one piece of artwork to the program’s permanent collection. The residency is open to local, career-leYel artists in Clatsop and Tillamook coun- ties, along with Wahkiakum County in Washington, who are working in any style or medium. Applications are open for the two inaugural residencies, which start July 11.
