4B THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, APRIL 8, 2016 Seaside Height’s Hot Cheetos reading group takes championship The Daily Astorian Submitted Photo The Hot Cheetos team from Seaside Heights Elementary School won an Oregon Battle of the Books competition held recently at the Seaside Public Library. SEASIDE — Since October, Gearhart Elementary School and Seaside Heights Elementary School have had teams of fourth- and ¿fth-graders reading the 16 books on the Oregon Battle of the Books list. Gearhart had 26 teams and Seaside had 30 teams. The books were divided into three groups of three in school bat- tles. Cumulative points were kept from all of the in-school battles, the last being in March. The top two teams from each school met at the Seaside Public Library on Sat- urday. The Gearhart teams are: the Splash Bros, Carson Taylor, Caleb Langmo, and River Quackenbush; and the Sea Ser- pents, Olivia Esnard and Ryder Ford. The Seaside Heights Teams are: the Five Amigos, Jacob Bonn, Coby Riches, Whitney Brown and Mitchell Smith; and the Hot Cheetos, Parker Cyde, Remi Loehr, Petra Alburas and Danna Silva-Ortega. Assisting the students were teach- ers Sena Bergquist and Erica Acton of Gearhart Elementary; Laurie Dough- erty, Sarah Collins, Kenna Walker and Dan Van of Seaside Heights; and Marian Rose, children’s librarian at Seaside Pub- lic Library. Three battles were waged at the library, two elimination battles and a ¿nal cham- pionship battle. The results are as follows: • First Battle: First place, Hot Cheetos (31 points); second place, Splash Bros (29 points) • Second Battle: First place, Sea Ser- pents (35 points); second place, Five Amigos (21 points) • Championship: First place, Hot Cheetos (40 points), second place, Sea Serpents (25 points) “Because of this competition, my son will become a lifelong reader,” one par- ent said. The Battle of the Books is a statewide voluntary reading motivation and com- prehension program whose mission is to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, and to broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehen- sion, promote academic excellence, and promote cooperative learning and team- work among students.
