His senior-led group helped bring the school’s basketball program from one of the worst in the country to one of the best. “This group sitting next to me and in the locker room right now, you know, the greatest sea- son in the history of our school, in our sport ended tonight,” Rueck said after the 80-51 loss to UConn on Sunday night. “And there’s one reason that I’m sad, and that it’s the last game that this team gets to play together. “This group is an absolute dream. I wish I could describe to people what it’s like to be their coach, where you walk in the gym every day and you just can’t wait to see them, has nothing to do with basketball. They’re committed to each other. They’re a true family.” Oregon State (32-5) was playing in its ¿rst national semi- ¿nals and the Beavers expect this to be the beginning, not the end. “It’s really exciting, the future,” said senior Ruth Ham- blin, who had 10 points, 11 KNAPPA — The Knappa softball team completed a three-game series sweep over Neah-Kah-Nie last week, with a 23-13, 10-8 marathon dou- bleheader victory over the Pirates Friday at Knappa. Combined, the Lady Log- gers outscored Neah-Kah-Nie 50-22 in three games. In Friday’s sweep, soph- omore Kaitlyn Truax was 2-for-3 at the plate, with a dou- ble and four runs batted in. Freshman Laicee Hendrickson was also 2-for-3, and sopho- more pitcher Paris Vanderburg allowed eight hits with three strikeouts. Vanderburg gave up ¿ve hits with ¿ve strikeouts in Game 2, while Alisha Murphy was 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Truax added a key three- run double. Connecticut won 80-51. rebounds and six blocks. “We’ve kind of set the bar high for this program and everyone’s expectations are going to con- tinue to be high, and we know how to handle that now. “And I think we’ve got a lot of young talent coming in. And our recruiting class is good. I’m really excited to see what the team does in the future and how they respond next year.” The Beavers won their ¿rst conference tournament title, and accomplished the goal of the senior class — getting to a Final Four. Sydney Wiese scored 13 points to lead Oregon State, which gambled by leaving Morgan Tuck open and focus- ing on stopping Stewart. Tuck responded with 21 points, including 16 in the ¿rst half. “I thought we could have done a little better job of show- ing a little bit more at Tuck than we did certainly, but you also hope maybe she misses one,” Rueck said. Bulldogs, Warriors split high-scoring twinbill By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian SHERIDAN — Warren- ton and Willamina combined for 59 runs in two games Sat- urday, in a lengthy, nonleague baseball doubleheader played at Sheridan High School. Willamina won the opener, 14-13, before the Warriors rebounded with a 19-13 vic- tory in Game 2. No de¿cit was too big for Warrenton, which scored ¿ve runs in the top of the seventh of Game 1, only to lose in the bottom of the seventh; and the Warriors overcame a 13- de¿- cit in Game 2, scoring nine runs in the fourth inning. “The defense and pitch- ing was a little frustrating at times, but I couldn’t have been happier with our offense,” said Warrenton coach Lennie Wolfe. “We had a number of players with three hits on the day (Derek Ham led with four) and we stole 14 bases. We just committed too many errors and shot ourselves in the foot.” Only ¿ve of Willamina’s 14 runs in Game 1 were earned. The Bulldogs led 13-8 going into the top of the seventh, when the Warriors scored ¿ve to tie. Tanner Onstot was 5-for-5 for Willamina, which had 14 hits and committed six errors in Game 1. The Bulldogs scored 13 runs in their ¿rst three at-bats of Game 2, but lost it all when the Warriors scored nine runs in the fourth. Dalton Knight and Ham both had doubles for Warren- ton, while Knight started on the mound and pitched six innings, giving up no runs after the third, with 10 strikeouts and two walks. On the day, Warrenton’s Justice Watson was of¿cially 3-for-3, and was hit by pitch ¿ve times — giving the senior 11 HBPs in six games. Softball Bulldogs sweep Warriors SHERIDAN — Willamina racked up 31 runs in a double- header softball sweep over War- renton Saturday, 15-8 and 16-3. The Bulldogs jumped on the scoreboard early and often in each game, which included a 10-2 lead after three innings of Game 1. Warrenton scored four runs in the fourth inning, but Wil- lamina pulled away with two runs each in the ¿fth and sixth. Warrenton’s Jo Armstrong had a double and drove in three runs, while Rachel Dyer had a double and two RBIs. Willamina’s Heather Grav- ley was the winning pitcher, allowing seven hits with three strikeouts and three walks. In Game 2, Willamina’s Madison Leno was 4-for-4 with a double, triple and four runs batted in. Landree Miethe, Claire Bussert and Brittany Rasmussen all had doubles for Warrenton, which trailed 9-1 after three innings. Gravley picked up another win, allowing six hits. Willa- mina had 16 hits in the second game, and took advantage of four Warrior errors. Dale Takalo started both games on the mound for the Loggers, as the sophomore ¿n- ished Game 1 in just 39 pitches. He struck out ¿ve with no walks. The Neah-Kah-Nie pitch- ers walked 12 and hit three batters, while the Pirates com- mitted eight errors on the day. Takalo and Mason Hoover had two hits apiece, and Logan Bartlett drove in two runs in the opener, in which Knappa led 12-0 after three innings. Takalo struck out four and walked none in two innings pitched of Game 2 (he has yet to walk a batter this season). Michal Goodman ¿nished and picked up the win. Jason Miller was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and Good- man legged out a triple in Game 2. “Our best clutch hitter last week was Noah Kinney,” said Knappa coach Jeff Miller. “He had three RBIs, and he had a very productive week. “Our approach at the plate still needs to get better, but I’ve been real pleased with the pitch- ing, and as a team we’re run- ning the bases real well. Reu- ben Cruz has at least two steals every game.
