team off to state tourney

The Astoria eighth-grade girls basketball is
making its annual trip to the state tournament
next month, and will be holding a car wash
to raise expenses, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at
Astoria Ford.
For the third year in a row, Astoria will be
competing in the Oregon Middle School State
Basketball Championships, March 4-6 in Bend,
Redmond and Sisters.

qualifying tournament or league. Astoria played

ball League tournaments in January, placing sec-
ond in one. They were awarded three-win and
one-loss consolation medals the second weekend.
The Astoria team also played in two Clats-
kanie Tiger tournaments in February, taking sec-

Scappoose, Grants Pass and Kelso.
Team members are Abby Albright, Eliza-
beth Barnett, Taileigh Cole, Grace Czarnecki,
Brooklynn Hankwitz, Baylee McSwain, Julia
Norris, Hailey O’Brien and Libby Whitsett.
The team is coached by Nathan Hankwitz,
and assisted by Pat O’Brien and Rob Niemi.
During the Astoria Middle School eighth-
grade season, the Vikings (coached by O’Brien)

Elgin Cook couldn’t play well Wednes-
day night was coy.

Oregon State tops Huskies
