3B THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 2016 Seaside Elks announce poster contest winners SEASIDE — Seaside Elks Lodge 1748 awarded Aubrey Kinnunen, a Seaside Heights Elementary student, ¿rst place in the annual Elks Eye Injury Prevention Poster Contest for her drawing of “Even Super- heroes need to protect their eyes.” She received $35 and a certi¿cate. Second place went to Lucy Gloria of Seaside Heights, and third place went to Kiana Oben- shain of Gearhart Elementary School, who each received $15 each and a certi¿cate. All three posters will be submitted to the Northwest District contest, and winners of that contest will be submitted to the Oregon State Elks contest. Twenty seven posters depicting how children can prevent eye injuries were received from Seaside Heights and Gearhart elementary schools. Each student received a certi¿cate of participation. The tradition of “putting away the Alleluias” occurs following the 10 a.m. service. This highlights the omission of “Alle- luias” during the season of Lent, which this year ends on March 26. Easter Sunday is March 27. Parishioners are asked to bring palm crosses or branches from Palm Sunday last year, which will be burned on Shrove Tuesday. The ashes will be used on Ash Wednesday. Grace offers the labyrinth for walking from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, with an introduction at 3 p.m. upon request. The annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper Local, Family Owned Company is being served from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Parish Hall. This very old tradition began when households used up fat and eggs before the fasting period during Lent. The Grace Youth Group presents this meal, which includes ham and all-you-can-eat pancakes. Wednesday is Ash Wednesday, the ¿rst day of Lent, and is being observed with two services for the imposition of ashes at noon and 7 p.m. Taizé music is being played during the evening service. Feb. 12 marks the beginning of Grace Church’s music series, Fridays in Lent. The concerts start at 12:10 p.m. and feature a different performer each week. Contemplative music is chosen for listening or for self-guided walking of the Stations of the Cross. The Feb. 12 musician is Jennifer Goodenberger (piano).
