The Valiants also had an 18-1 lead early in the second quarter. Yet there they were late in the game, having to run a spread offense to ¿QDOO\KROGRIIDGHWHUPLQHG Seaside team, 40-31. The Gulls — playing without junior Maddi Utti — VWUXJJOHGLQWKH¿UVWKDOIDQG trailed 20-9 at halftime. Seaside committed 20 turnovers and shot 3-of-18 IURPWKH¿HOGLQWKH¿UVWKDOI before outscoring Valley Catholic 22-20 in the second half. The Gulls even pulled to within 32-24 at the end of the third quarter. But Valley Catholic’s Molly Danielson scored six of her game-high 20 points early in the fourth to help the Valiants keep the lead. Seaside coach Wally Hamer called it “a tremendous effort tonight,” as the Gulls “found their IRRWLQJ WR ¿JKW EDFN DQG make a game of it,” he said. The Valiants committed 27 turnovers of their own, DQG ¿QLVKHG RI IURP WKH¿HOG Paige Ideue made three 3-pointers to lead the Gulls with nine points, while Whitney Westerholm added seven. Sydney Villegas had 13 rebounds for Seaside, which plays at Astoria Friday. Valley Catholic’s Shankar Krishnakumar and Vlad Katin hit back-to-back 3-pointers to close the third period. Krishnakumar nailed another trey early in the fourth, and Avery Jones scored on two drives to the hoop with just under four minutes remaining to help the Valiants build a 48-42 lead with 2:19 left.
