SPORTS THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, JANUARY 15, 2016 3A Astoria girls score win over Valiants By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian Astoria swim coach Amy Emmett is ¿nding places for her swimmers, and the swimmers are ¿nding their places, as the season enters the ¿nal month before districts. The Astoria swim team hosted Valley Catholic for a Cowapa League dual meet Thursday at the Astoria ATuatic Center, where the Fishermen and Valiants each had a win in the team standings. Valley Catholic scored a narrow 89-76 victory over the Astoria boys, while the Lady Fishermen racked up 109 points in their win over the Val- iants (47). “,¶m hoping we don¶t have any more bad weather or sickness,” Em- mett said. “We lost one meet (off the schedule) and haven¶t seen a few teams this year. So we have a hard time knowing Tuite how we stack up. “And ,¶m still playing with events,” she said. “,¶m not sure what events the kids will be swimming, once we get to the end. Some of my new kids don¶t like the events they¶re in, but if they can do them, that¶s where they¶ll swim, because we need the points.” The Astoria girls won eight of the 11 events, with two victories apiece from Ashley Schacher (50-yard free- style and 100-yard butterÀy) and 0egan Sparks (100-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke). They also both swam legs on the winning 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay. Elsewhere, 0egan Schacher won the 200-yard individual medley, and Kendal *ustafson ¿nished ¿rst in the 100-yard breaststroke. Olivia Paul was also part of both winning relays. On the boys¶ side, it was Valley Catholic winning 10 of the 11 events. The lone Astoria victory came from Jacob Hulti in the 100 free- style (56.48 seconds). The Falcons had hopes of an upset early, leading 26-23 at half time, before the Loggers found a rhythm in the second half and outscored Faith Bible 26-12 ove the ¿nal two Tuarters. “We just had trouble putting the ball in the basket,” Knappa coach Chris Spencer said. “They were giving us problems with their 3-2 zone, and just making i dif¿cult for us to score. They¶re a good team.” Knappa¶s depth, however, “¿ nally started wearing them down in the second half,” he said. Dale Takalo scored 11 of hi game-high 24 points in the fourth Tuarter, while Colton Weirup ¿n ished with 12 points. The Loggers were 15-of-23 a the free-throw line.
