AHS PREVIEWS THE DAILY ASTORIAN • THURSDAY, DECEMBER 3, 2015 9A Large turnout will help Astoria swim team By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian The numbers keep gradu- ally increasing for the Astoria swim program. The Fishermen may have lost some quality, but they’re gaining in quantity, as Amy Emmett’s team enters the pool with more swimmers than they’ve had in a few years. Astoria had 34 swim- mers on the preseason roster, which always helps in the dual meets. On the downside, Astoria had Must two state quali¿ers a year ago, and only one re- turns. Megan Sparks is back for her senior season, while the Fishermen will be without Bryce Nurding, who qual- i¿ed for state last year as a junior. Team-wise, the Lady Fishermen ¿nished ¿fth out of nine teams in the District 1/4A meet, while the boys placed sixth. Sparks won the only indi- vidual district championship for the Astoria girls, ¿nishing the 100-yard breaststroke in one minute, 11.79 seconds. She ¿nished with the 10th-best time (1:09.95) in the preliminaries at state. Nurding was the district champion in the 500-yard freestyle (5:36.58), but did not qualify for the ¿nals at state. Still, the Fish return some talent. The Astoria girls’ 200- yard medley relay squad of a year ago ² which ¿n- ished second behind Valley Catholic in the district meet — returns three-fourths of its team, with Sparks, senior Ashley Schacher and sopho- more Megan Schacher. Ashley Schacher was third in the butterÀy in the district meet, and is one of nine se- niors on the girls’ side, along with Sparks, Laura Axelsen, Daisy Gayral, Victoria Kee, Shoshanna McCleary, Olivia Joshua Bessex/The Daily Astorian Jacob Hulti will return to the pool for Astoria this season. Sparks won the event. More wrestlers on the mat for Astoria By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian THE WRESTLERS The Joshes are gone, but the turnout was good for the Astoria wrestling program. At this time a year ago, the Fishermen had 17 wrestlers on the roster — heading into this season, they’ve got 29 on the mat. Which can only help, as the team will have to overcome some key graduations last sea- son. An unfortunate knee inju- ry late in the year ended Josh Long’s quest for a state title, while Josh 5aichl took ¿fth at district, followed by a ¿fth-place ¿nish at state in the 220-pound class. Head coach Roy Sanchez returns for his second year with the Fishermen, who had two coaches in two years (Jeff Mab- ry and Ron Alley) prior to his arrival last season. Sanchez does have some ex- perienced wrestlers on the ros- ter, as Brendan Coberly, Mateo DeVargas and Bronson Holthu- sen are on board for their senior seasons, while other wrestlers to watch include junior Jared Lucore and sophomores Trey Hageman and Tyler Ranta.
