‘What do you think about
putting portable toilets on the
Riverwalk for the homeless?’
“I don’t think it should be portable
toilets. It should be regular public
bathrooms like at the Doughboy and
across from the YMCA. Keep the
regular system we already have in
place, of public bathrooms, and keep
up with cleaning them, instead of
getting more bathrooms to clean.”
Rose Foss, Astoria
“I think it’s a ¿ ne idea. I think
it’s humane for those who have
nowhere to go.”
Dan Stein, Astoria
“I think as long as they make a
commitment to maintain them,
that’s ¿ ne. A lot of people would
bene¿ t, not Must the homeless.”

6trong winds and rain Tues-
day caused small landslides,
downed trees that blocked
roadways and power outages
across Clatsop County.
The North Coast and Coast
5ange remains under a À ood
watch through Wednesday af-
ternoon, the National Weather
6ervice warned.
5esidents of Astoria, Can-
non Beach, Tillamook, Ne-
tarts, Paci¿ c City, 9ernonia,
Jewell, 6unset 6ummit, Lee’s
Camp and Trask should be
on alert and use caution when
traveling.
Clatsop County Public
Works Director Michael 6um-
mers said county road crews
were out all day Tuesday until
about p.m.
Crews responded to two
landslides on Hamlet 5oad,
south of U.6. Highway near
(lsie.
Last weekend a landslide
blocked Lewis and Clark 5oad
at milepost , which crews
have cleared.
Trees were reported down
in multiple places in Olney,
Brownsmead, Knappa and
Westport.

While the region is still un-

ed landslides are possible.
“Intense rainfall is a com-
mon landslide trigger,´ Bill
Burns, engineering geologist
at the state Department of Ge-
ology and Mineral Industries,
said in a statement. “Land-
slides and debris À ows are
possible during this weather
event, so it’s important to be
aware of the potential hazard.´
Debris À ows are rapidly
moving, e[tremely destruc-
tive landslides that can easily
travel a mile or more, depend-
ing on the terrain. They can
transport boulders and logs in
a fast-moving soil and water
slurry.
People, structures and roads
below steep slopes in canyons,
and near the mouths of can-
yons, may be at serious risk.
Great American 6mokeout nears
Free kits to encourage people
to quit smoking will be avail-
able Thursday during the Great
American 6mokeout.
The program began in
and has grown to a national
event to encourage people who
use tobacco products to quit or
to make a plan to quit.
The cigarette smoking rate
for pregnant women in Clatsop
County percent is twice as
high as the national average and

Crews from Charter Communications remove part of a tree that fell on cables along U.S.
Highway 30 near John Day County P ark Tuesday. Strong winds and rain caused several
trees and power lines along Highway 30 and U.S. Highway 26 to fall throughout the day.
Medical costs associated
with tobacco use in Clatsop
County are estimated at mil-
lion annually. Cigarette smoking
among adults in Clatsop County
percent, is higher than the
rest of Oregon, percent.
Tobacco use remains the No.
preventable cause of death and
disease in the 8.6., the Centers
for Disease Control and Preven-
tion reports. The health bene¿ ts
of quitting start immediately.
6tatistics show the chance of
heart attack decreases, blood
À ow improves and the risk of
cancer decreases.
Quit kits, containing quit
tips, a straw, paper clip, hard
candy and more, will be dis-
persed at various locations in
Clatsop County, including some
coffee shops, The Harbor, Co-
lumbia Memorial Hospital and
Providence 6easide Hospital.
The idea is to use the items in
the quit kit instead of tobacco.
