Wahanna Road, is serving as a Clatsop County collec- tion site for Operation Christmas Child during National Collection Week, Monday through Nov. 23. This annual project of Samaritan’s Purse, an inter- national Christian relief and evangelism organization, was created to spread joy to millions of children around the world by giving them shoe bo[es ¿lled with fun toys, school supplies, hygiene items and notes of encouragement. “Through the simple act of ¿lling a shoe box, someone in Clatsop Coun- ty can make a tangible difference in the life of a child halfway around the world,” Clatsop County volunteer project coordinator LeAnn Kinnee said. “Anyone can participate and bring joy to a child facing dif¿cult cir- cumstances.” During National Collection Week, anyone can drop off a gift-¿lled shoe box at the church to send to a child in need overseas. This year, Clatsop County project coordinators hope to collect 1,050 shoe boxes. The dates and hours of collection are from: 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through Nov. 20; 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 21; 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 22; and 8 to 9 a.m. Nov. 23. Hours are subject to change. Herzig spent most of his life in Northern California, in the Sac- ramento area. He was heavily in- volved with the Japanese-American community learning, teaching and performing their traditional folk dances (minyo). Later, he moved to New Mexico where he taught folk dancing at Saint John’s College in Santa Fe. He and his partner, artist Charles Schweigert, moved to Asto- ria in 2009.
