Burns (pictured in- VHWWRSD&ODWVRS&RXQW\VKHULII8QDEOHWR¿QGDQ\RIKLVUHODWLYHV WRJLYHWKHDOEXPWRWKHFRXSOHGRQDWHGLWWRWKHClatsop County Historical Society. 2XWRIWKHEOXHWKH(DUUHFHQWO\UHFHLYHGDQHPDLOIURPMary CarrollRI%URFNYLOOH2QWDULR&DQDGD'XULQJDQ,QWHUQHWVHDUFK WROHDUQPRUHDERXWKHUJUDQGPRWKHU¶VEURWKHUWKHYHU\VDPH-DFN V. Burns, she came across Cindy’s blog (OurShabbyNest.com) post DERXW¿QGLQJWKHSKRWRDOEXPDQGFRQWDFWHGWKHKLVWRULFDOVRFLHW\ so they could exchange information. 0DU\JUHZXSKHDULQJDERXW³8QFOH-DFN´EXWXQIRUWXQDWHO\E\ the time she became interested in her family’s history, all of the rel- DWLYHVZKRFRXOGKDYHKHOSHGZLWKKHUUHVHDUFKZHUHJRQH³7KDQN KHDYHQVIRUWKH,QWHUQHWDQGVXFKNLQGSHRSOHZKRYDOXHWKHSDVW´ VKHZURWH´,QRZKDYHDEHWWHUSLFWXUHRIZKR8QFOH-DFN%XUQVZDV DQGKRZKHOLYHGKLVOLIH ³,DPVRKDSS\WKDW&LQG\DQGKHUKXVEDQGGRQDWHGWKHSKRWRDO- bum to the Historical Society rather than destroy it. Because of them, the museum now has another bit of Astoria’s history to share with the QH[WJHQHUDWLRQ7KLV\RXQJFRXSOHKDVPDGHPH-DFN¶VJUDQGQLHFHD KDSS\UHVHDUFKHUDQGWKH\KDYHDOORZHGPHWRFRPSOHWHVRPHSX]]OH pieces that were missing from my grandmother’s family history. ³7KH%XUQVIDPLO\PHPEHUVVSUHDGDFURVV&DQDGDDQGWKH86 EXW,OLNHWRWKLQNWKDWWKH\ZRXOGEHKDSS\WKDWVRPHRI-DFN¶VKLV- WRU\IRXQGLWVZD\EDFNKRPHWRKLVUHODWLYHVLQ2QWDULR&DQDGD ,NQRZWKDWWKHPXVHXPZLOOWDNHZRQGHUIXOFDUHRI8QFOH-DFN¶V LQIRUPDWLRQ´ ³2KP\WKDWPDGHPHWHDUXS´&LQG\VDLGZKHQVKHUHDG0DU\¶V HPDLO³7KLVUHDOO\PDGHP\GD\´ A BIG JOY A F RU\HDUV$VWRULDQVDQGWRXULVWVDOLNHKDYHEHHQGLVPD\HG about the deterioration of the house that once belonged to Capt. George Conrad Flavel on the corner 15th Street and )UDQNOLQ$YHQXH%RWKDUHSLFWXUHGLQVHW%XLOWLQDWD reputed cost of $4,000 (about $114,000 now) by Erick Gus- tafson, it is about 4,500 square feet (without the attic). $EDQGRQHGLQWKHVE\WKHODVW)ODYHOVWROLYHWKHUH Florence and her adult children, Harry and Mary Louise, WKHKRXVHKDGEHHQOHIWWRPRXOGHUHYHUVLQFH7KLV\HDULWZDV ¿QDOO\UHVFXHGIURPWKHIDPLO\¶VFOXWFKHVDQGLVXQGHUJRLQJ a complete restoration, thanks to new owner Greg Newen- hof, co-owner of City Lumber Company, who bought the property in May. $Q\RQHGULYLQJE\WKHKRXVHUHFHQWO\FDQVHHWKHUHDUH already workmen bustling around most days, and already FKDQJHVDQGLPSURYHPHQWVDUHYLVLEOHWRWKHH[WHULRUPRVW notably a new roof and chimney repairs. One can almost hear WKHKRXVHDQGHYHU\RQHHOVHVLJKLQJZLWKUHOLHI 2QHWKRUQ\SUREOHPZDVWKHJDUDJH²LWKDGEHHQFRP- SOHWHO\RYHUJURZQWKHQURWWHGDQGFROODSVHG*UHJZDQWHGWR restore it, but wasn’t sure what it looked like. Astoria’s archi- tectural historian John Goodenberger came to the rescue, ¿QGLQJVRPHROGSKRWRVKHWRRNRIWKHJDUDJHLQWKHPLGWR late 1990s.
