NORTH COAST THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, AUGUST 28, 2015 3A Volleyball serves up a new season By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian SCOREBOARD PREP SCHEDULE WARRENTON — The Knappa and Warrenton vol- leyball teams opened the 01 season the same way they’ve opened the last three — against each other. And — keeping the tradition intact — the Warriors won their fourth-straight season opener over the Loggers, -1, -1, -, Thursday night at War- renton. The Warriors held sizable leads in all three games, only to see Knappa rally to within at least three points in each game. The Lady Loggers over- came a -16 de¿cit in Game to grab a brief - edge, before Warrenton was able to score three straight to close out the game and the match. Every player in the lineup was contributing to an ear- ly 8-point Warrenton lead in Game 1. Trua[ had four kills, Landwehr dished out seven as- sists with four digs, and Strain was 10-for-10 serving for the Loggers. “Not a bad showing for a ¿rst game against a bigger school,” said Knappa coach Jeff Kaul. Warrenton had several serve-receive errors and missed ¿ve serves, and the Loggers ral- lied to within 18-1. And the comeback didn’t stop there, as Ashly Silva — trailing 22-16 — served Knap- pa into a 22-22 tie. A kill by Trua[ and ace serve for Kaitlyn Landwehr put the Loggers ahead 2-2, but Warrenton answered with three straight points, including a kill by %iel at match point. “Too close for comfort,” said Warrenton coach Jenny Forney Smith. “Knappa has a After record catch, %uoy 10 Chinook ¿shery to close Friday Hatchery coho and summer steelhead are still game The Daily Astorian $nglers ¿shing in the %uoy 10 area near the mouth of the Columbia River will have to release any Chinook salmon they catch after Friday. Following a week of record catch rates and angler turnout, state ¿shery managers from Washington state and Oregon Thursday agreed to close the SoSular ¿shery several days earlier than anticipated. Despite the early closure for Chinook retention, the %uoy 10 season has been a re- cord. The total catch over four weeks of ¿shing is e[pected to reach or e[ceed ,000 Chi- nook in the 16-mile stretch of the lower Columbia River. Angler effort has been among the highest observed and angler catch rates have been 0 percent higher than the previous record set in 01. With four ¿shing days yet to be counted, harvest this year has already e[ceeded last year¶s catch by 6,000 ¿sh. ³This year¶s %uoy 10 Chi- nook ¿shery got off to a fast start and just kept picking up speed,” said Guy Norman, re- gional director for the Wash- ington Department of Fish and Wildlife. “We had hoped to keep the Chinook ¿shery open through Labor Day, but the mounting catch reached the harvest guideline sooner than e[pected.” The harvest guideline limits impacts on wild ¿sh protected under the federal tinue to provide good ¿shing for Chinook in the Columbia River upstream to the Han- ford Reach,” he said. “If the %uoy 10 ¿shery is any indica- tion, it should be a great year for salmon ¿shing.” Earlier this week the ¿sh- ery closed to the retention of wild non ¿n-clipped Chi- nook. However, according to Chris Kern, Oregon Depart- ment of Fish Wildlife ¿sh division deputy administrator, even with that change the ongoing monitoring showed catch rates continued to be high enough to e[haust the re- maining tule impacts. “If we don’t take this ac- Endangered Species Act.
