SPORTS 4A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24, 2015 Perth brings the Heat, Astoria gets the win SCOREBOARD SPORTS SCHEDULE By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian The Astoria Ford Fisher- men are still undefeated in international competition, and fans at Aiken Field were well-entertained by a night of Australian-American baseball, as the Perth Heat — a touring youth team from Western Aus- tralia — made their third visit to the North Coast. And for the third time since 2010, the Astoria Ford summer baseball team scored a victory over the Aussies. The two teams played Tuesday night until they got tired — which happened to be 9 1/2 innings. Astoria Ford was leading 12-1 when the game was stopped in the bot- tom of the 10th. %XW WKH ¿QDO VFRUH ZDVQ¶W really the point of it. The game was more about some 15-, 16- and 17-year-old kids from dif- ferent countries getting togeth- er for a baseball game. The teams had lunch to- gether before the contest, and they all stuck around for a barbecue afterward, as Asto- ria once again put on a good show for Australia-American relations. While the Perth team made a stop at the Goonies House and was generally impressed with the area, they were even more impressed with the base- ball. ³,W¶VJHWWLQJSUHWW\GLI¿FXOW at this point,” said Perth in- ¿HOGHU0DWW6SURXOHUHIHUULQJ to the competition the Austra- lians are seeing on their trip through Oregon, which includ- ed a tournament in Medford last week. Perth has two touring teams — an older ‘varsity’ team, and a younger ‘junior varsity’ squad of mostly 15- and 16-year-olds, who played Tuesday against Astoria. Chances are, there aren’t many players from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, who have played at Aiken Field. 6SURXOHLVOLNHO\WKH¿UVW “Coming from the Middle East — there’s not a lot of baseball exposure there,” he said. “One of the most impres- sive things I’ve seen about the TODAY Junior State Baseball — Asto- ria Ford B at Seaside (2), 5 p.m. THURSDAY Junior State Baseball — Asto- ria Ford B at Warrenton (2), 4 p.m. SUNDAY Baseball — Singapore at Astoria Ford, 7 p.m. Taelor Kay, Sr., Clatskanie Bri Marsch, Sr., Warrenton Mackenzie Mitchell, So., Clats- kanie Hailey Schimmel, So., Rainier Kiersten Sermino, Jr., Clatskanie Kacy Strong, Jr., Clatskanie Julia Taylor, So., Rainier BASEBALL ROSTERS PERTH HEAT Name Matt Sproule James Cappello Liam Collins Sean Fekete Ethan Cooper Jordan Courcha Shaan Shahbaz MacLain Wilson BASEBALL Astoria Ford 12, Perth Heat 1 Perth 000 100 000 0—1 4 4 4 Astoria 010 310 007 x—12 14 1 Shahbaz, Cooper (3), John (5), Cappello (7), Abrahams (9), Wilson (9) and Seidel; Wallace, Brown (6), Fremstad (9) and Helmersen, Gohl (9).
