2A THE DAILY ASTORIAN • TUESDAY, MARCH 3, 2015 Orcas, new calf return to coast LONG BEACH, Wash. — A baby orca, its mother and extended family made a re- turn visit to waters directly off the Long Beach Peninsula Thursday afternoon after being photographed at the mouth of Grays Harbor earlier in the day. In their latest posting, scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration express their pleasure at having great success observing and track- ing the whales on the outer coast the past two weeks. “I keep thinking we have probably used all our luck up but things keep falling into place,” said Brad Hanson, lead researcher on the Southern Resident killer whale sur- vey team. “By (Wednesday) we were down to one day’s fuel supply for the Zodiac. The whales have been all over the coasts of Washington and Oregon in the past two weeks but they managed to conveniently be in the vicinity of the entrance to Grays Harbor (Thursday allowing us to go in and quickly refuel. “On the way back out we had just crossed the bar when we ran into the whales in the shipping channel, and in NOAA photo A newborn orca and its mom were pho- tographed Thursday near the mouth of Grays Harbor. They moved down south off the Long Beach Peninsula later in the day. particular L94 [the new mother] and the new calf. This allowed us to spend more time with them, get a better look, and get a better photo than yesterday. In this photo you can see the fetal folds which indicates that the calf is only a few days old and this photo also seems to sum up the calf’s vi- tality.
