And for the third time (and the sec- ond on a neutral court), the Indians won, this time a 61-50 decision over the Gulls. Seaside came in riding the momen- tum of a last-second win at Tillamook, but the magic wasn’t working for the Gulls in their fourth game against Scappoose. The Indians answered a 4-0 deficit to start the game with a 10-0 run, and never trailed after that. With the win, Scappoose will bypass the Regional Play-In round, and will host a lower-seeded team in a Sweet 16 playoff March 6, while the Gulls return to action Friday (opponent to be deter- mined). Seaside nearly overcame a 29-20 halftime deficit, with baskets by Hunter Thompson, Jackson Januik and Jaxson Smith in the third quarter, bringing the Gulls to within 36-34. Scappoose answered with a pair of 3-pointers from Chase Johnson and Ja- cob Wendelschafer in the final seconds of the third to give the Indians a 44-36 going into the fourth quarter. The Gulls normally play their best when they’re behind, and in fact cut the Scappoose lead to 54-48 on a Januik jump shot with 2:30 left. But the Indians did just enough to keep the lead, knocking down free throws to cement the victory. Johnson led a trio of players in double figures with 17. Wendelschafer and Reed Johnson both scored 11, off-setting 24 points by Januik. GIRLS BASKETBALL Banks 43, Astoria 25 BANKS — They had to work and scrap for every point, but the Banks Braves finally held off Astoria for a closer-than-it-looked, 43-25 win Tues- day night, in a Cowapa League girls basketball playoff. The Lady Fish were playing their game — low-scoring with lots of de- fense and forced turnovers. And it was working … for a while. Astoria was within 31-24 midway JEFF TER HAR — For The Daily Astorian Seaside’s Zach Marston tries to get a shot off over the hand of a Scappoose defender, in Tuesday’s Cowapa League tie-breaker. through the fourth quarter, when Banks junior JoJo Wren hit a 3-pointer that sparked a 12-0 run for the Braves. “We got within seven points with four minutes left, and I thought we were going to be able to make a run, but we couldn’t get over the hump,” said Astoria coach Mike Jacobson. Astoria lost Chloee Hunt and Ash- lee Dalton to fouls in the final quar- ter (Hunt had three fouls at halftime), and the Braves finally wore down a short-handed Astoria team. Banks improves to 15-11 overall and earns the Cowapa’s No. 3 seed. Astoria drops to 10-16, and may get left out of the Regional Play-in round as a result of their RPI. The Lady Fishermen scored five points in each of the first three quar- ters, while Banks scored eight in each of the first three and led 24-15 going into the fourth. After Wren hit a 3-pointer to give the Braves a 27-17 advantage, Kaylee Mitchell made four straight free throws, Dalton added a pair of foul shots, and Rylee DeMander scored on a layup to bring Astoria to within 31-24. Wren answered with the trey, and the Braves made their free throws down the stretch to pull away. DeMander and Mitchell both scored nine points for Astoria, which has not beaten Banks since Feb. 9, 2010. Banks has won 12 straight vs. the Lady Fish, including three games this year by scores 44-26, 43-13 and 43-25. “Chloee Hunt maybe played 12 minutes at the most due to foul trouble and then fouling out early in the fourth quarter,” said Jacobson, who “really felt bad for her, considering the fouls that were called on her. There was no consistency with the officials in the game for either team. “So when your leading scorer and rebounder is out most of the game, it hurts us in every aspect of the game itself,” he said. “I thought with all the injuries and sickness that we dealt with this year that the kids played hard and pushed through it as well as any team that we have coached in the past.” In addition to Hunt and Dalton finishing the game on the bench with fouls, the Fishermen were without Mykka Abrahams, Taylor Mickle and Kaisa Israel, all out with illness or in- juries.
