THE DAILY ASTORIAN • FRIDAY, JANUARY 9, 2015 SPORTS 7A Utti scores 28 in win over Newport Cubs By GARY HENLEY The Daily Astorian SEASIDE — After play- ing Top 10 teams for the past two weeks, the Seaside girls basketball team took a break from the tough com- petition Thursday night, and broke their three-game losing streak. Maddi Utti poured in 28 points, and the Gulls cruised past Newport, 65-32, in a nonleague game. Seaside forced 35 turn- the game got out of hand ear- ly. The Gulls built a 21-0 lead, and the Cubs had seven possessions, taking nearly two minutes just to get the ball past midcourt. By the time Newport scored, the Cubs had 13 turn- overs. Utti scored 12 of her 28 in - mate Whitney Westerholm adding seven of her 17 points Seaside’s Jaxson Smith, No. 22, goes up for a break-away lay up against Newport. Utti also had seven re- 18 steals. Haylee Dundas added four steals, and Alli- son Bussert dished out four assists. Since Dec. 30, the Gulls have played No. 8-ranked La Grande, No. 3 Henley, No. 1 Sutherlin and No. 2 Glad- stone. BOYS BASKETBALL Seaside 57, Newport 41 SEASIDE — Seaside had - ures, and the Gulls snapped a three-game losing skid with a 57-41 win over Newport Thursday night, in nonleague boys basketball action. The Cubs led 9-5 early, before Seaside went on a 9-0 run, capped by two scores off the bench from Michael Lewis. SWIMMING Gulls split with Valiants SEASIDE — The Valley Catholic and Seaside swim teams split a Cowapa League dual meet Thursday after- noon at Sunset Empire Pool, as the teams head into the midway point of the league season. The Seaside boys won a close meet, 87-75, bringing their season dual meet record to 3-0. The Gulls have won 10 straight dual meets dating - feated effort. Valley Catholic defeated the Lady Gulls, 105-56, as Seaside falls to 2-1 in dual meets. - try won both sprint races, the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, setting personal records in both. - side winners included Brad Rzewnicki (200 and 500 yard freestyles); Luke Liljenwall (100 freestyle); and Will Kendall (100-yard breast- stroke). Seaside also won the 200- yard freestyle relay (Rze- wnicki, Kendall, Sam Beau- doin and Dylan Townsend); and Rzewnicki, Beaudoin, Will Garvin and Liljenwall teamed up to win the 400- yard freestyle relay. Seaside travels to The Dalles Saturday for the Riv- erhawk Invitational.
