FROM THE MILL
Personal Glimpses of the Paper
Makers at the Crown-Willamette
Plant.
The present rage of flu, la grippt,
or maybe its just ordinary winter
sickness, has been felt by the various
mill departments and the employment
office reports that 96 employes were
missing on one day recently. At pres
ent, however, many have returned and
this week shows an average, of only
15 on the missing list.
Miss Alice Stone, who has been
plant nurse for the past 18 months,
has been compelled to leave her work
here and take up her residence for
three months on her homestead six
miles north of Molalla, in order to ob
tain her patent. During her absence
the position is being filled by Mrs.
Fuller.
Jim Rayl, who received injuries in
forearm and left leg by falling 25 feet
from a scaffold, returned to work
on March 12th after an absence of 27
days. Jim is a foreman in the construc
tion department and as this division
has been registering a "big hit" in the
safety first campaign, this accident is
regretted from various angles. Jiiu
promises to do better in the future.
Mrs. F. A. Burdon, wife of the fin
ishing room foreman, has been quite
ill for sometime with pneumonia but
is expecting to be removed from St.
Vincents hospital to the family home
in "Gladstone soon.
Crown Willamette Baseball Club, a
member of the Willamette Valley

boys are looking forward to another

favorites will be In uniform again.

No. 8 paper machine, reputed to be
the oldest one on the Coast, closed
down Thursday night. This machine
has been running wraps ' and in its
stead No. 7 paper machine will begin
operating immediately on the same
grade of paper. This latter machine
has been idle "for some time but is
now replacing No. 8 machine because
of the reduced operating charge and
increased capacity. All newsprint ma
chines are operating at full capacity.
