FROM THE MILL Personal Glimpses of the Paper Makers at the Crown-Willamette Plant. The present rage of flu, la grippt, or maybe its just ordinary winter sickness, has been felt by the various mill departments and the employment office reports that 96 employes were missing on one day recently. At pres ent, however, many have returned and this week shows an average, of only 15 on the missing list. Miss Alice Stone, who has been plant nurse for the past 18 months, has been compelled to leave her work here and take up her residence for three months on her homestead six miles north of Molalla, in order to ob tain her patent. During her absence the position is being filled by Mrs. Fuller. Jim Rayl, who received injuries in forearm and left leg by falling 25 feet from a scaffold, returned to work on March 12th after an absence of 27 days. Jim is a foreman in the construc tion department and as this division has been registering a "big hit" in the safety first campaign, this accident is regretted from various angles. Jiiu promises to do better in the future. Mrs. F. A. Burdon, wife of the fin ishing room foreman, has been quite ill for sometime with pneumonia but is expecting to be removed from St. Vincents hospital to the family home in "Gladstone soon. No. 8 paper machine, reputed to be the oldest one on the Coast, closed down Thursday night. This machine has been running wraps ' and in its stead No. 7 paper machine will begin operating immediately on the same grade of paper. This latter machine has been idle "for some time but is now replacing No. 8 machine because of the reduced operating charge and increased capacity. All newsprint ma chines are operating at full capacity. The evening courses offered in var ious fields of home economics by Miss Reitan are proving to be very popular with the office girls. It is rumored that "home made" hats "will usher in Easter day and the girls declare it to be a practical solution of one phase of the H. C. L.
