SLOWNESS OF
COUNTY COURT
IS CRITICIZED
ESTACADA, June 14. The Clacka
mas county court was severely criti
cised by speakers at the meeting of
the Clackamas County Development
league here Saturday. Slowness la
carrying out the program outlined for
which a road bond issue was voted
last spring was the basis of the at
tacks. The league went on record asking
the court to fulfill the program as
originally put forward and demanded
that the court employ a competent en
gineer and not interfere with the cost
system, which the court has thrown
out
An adjourned meeting of the league,
to be a mass meeting to which the
members of the court and all tax
payers of the county are to be invited
has been set for June 2S in Oregon
City. The court will be asked to ex
plain at this meeting its policy and
the delay ia the road program.

Hal A. Randa, who resigned as mas
ter road engineer, was quoted by
Schuebel as stating that the county
had no definite road program, that
its lack of system is costing the tax
payers thousands of dollars in useless
expenditures and that he would not
remain in the employ of the county
under present conditions for $10,000
per year.
The meeting Saturday was the third
monthly session of the Clackamas
County Development league, which
was formed at the time of the bond
issue for $2,000,000 worth of hard
surface roads in the county. It was
well attended by representatives from
all over the county, with Carl J. Ren
hard, of Colton, president, presiding.
A reading by little Shirley Robbins, of
Molalla, proved an interesting diver
sion. The meeting was held in- the
open air at Estacada park.

WASHINGTON, June 16. An em
bargo on coal exports as a means of
relieving serious fuel shortages in
various section of the country, notably
In New England was taken up for con
sideration today by several depart
ments of the government.
Reports from New England receivea
in the past few days by the interstate
commerce commission have ,told of a
coal shortage so serious that ill some
municipalities only two days' supply
i on hand. Governor Cooolidge of
Massachusetts, has made repeated re
quests for relief to the commission.
Other sections of the country are
said to be facing similar problems
although relief has been effected in
bv tie state commerce commission.

Estacada has hardly recovered from
the excitement of the big fire lat
Saturday morning, when the Cascade
garage, owned by Wilcox Bros., was
gutted by fire. The loss has been
estimated at $40,000 which include!
ueventeen automobiles and all the
machinery and fixtures, which were
of the best, and the large bulging.
Wilcox Bros, lost four cars and the
balance were machines in storage. On
ly three of the machines were insured,
Ed Douglass,' D. II. Morgan's and H.
G. Marchbank's. It has not been de
cided yet whether the building, which
was owned by Dr. Adix of Gresham,
will be rebuilt or not. ,
The Tom Thumb wedding at the
school house auditorium Tuesday
night, given by the little folks of the
town, proved to be a very .Interesting
affair. There was a good attendance
and the audience fully appreciated the
efforts of the little folks. When at
the close Photographer Boner tried to
get a flashlight picture, there was' con
siderable delay, as the bride wept and
refused to be comforted. Another lit
tle girl was put In her place, but she,
too, became an unwilling bride and a
third little girl was substituted before
the picture could be taken. It was all
very amusing and perhaps more so as
this procedure was not on the pro
