C, Tuesday, where the former went as a delegate to the Northwest Realty association convention during ita remit three-day fusion, report that they were royal ly entertained while guwi of the northern city and that they had a most enjoyable trip to and f-om that city, Regarding the work of the Associ ation In convention. Mr. Dlllman slate that much constructive work waa accomplished and the attendance this year was more than double that of a year ago. More than one thou sand member of the association In good standing were in attendance, whereas the membership a year ago was about f,00. The membership of the association covers the state of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana and part of flrltlsh Columbia end la made up of repreaentatlve realty dealer from all the principal cities and actions of those states. In speaking of hla trip Mr. Dillman reconted a Victory celebration held by the citizens of Victoria, foatures of which ware of unusual Interest to the visiting delegate. Sherman J. Bur rord, a former realdetit of Oregon City and at present Inspector of Foreign Immigration In Victoria, arranged a float in the parade hel during the cel ebration, the float being emblematical of and representing the United States, and received a great amount of fav orable comment from membebrs of the convention and Vrom official of the celebration. .Mr. Dlllman atate that Mr. Rurford la held In the high est esteem by the beet citizens of Vic toria and baa built up an -enviable rcpoutatlon boh for efficiency and cou-tcny In hla execution of the du ties of the position which he holds. He haa a reputation for congeniality and illlrjgnen to wrve In the dia charge of the many duties that are In line with his position, as we'l a being known as adhering Inflexibly to the letter of the" law which governs hi actions as Inspector of Immigration. Mr. Dlllman remark that Oregon City may well be proud to be represented by a man such as Mr. Rurford has proved himself to be. SHANGHAIED WHILE fISIT One of the young men of this city to expaience an unusual Incident, and one which he will not soon forget, is Earl Wink, who waa among the Clackamas county boys going to the Mexican border when Uncle Sam call ed for men, and was also among those to respond when the United States became Involved In the European war. It waa while Mr. Wink waa a lad of .bout 17 years of age that he accom panied several of the boys of this county to Portland, and waa Induced by several men to sign a paper, the nature of which the boys bad not In quired. They were told to accompany tho men, which they did, and were taken aboard a windjammer In Port land, where they were kept prisoners until the boat departed from the port After the boat left her dock In Port land the boy were liberated, and put to wcrk, and were Informed they were bound for Ireland, but the boys thought differently, so they watched their chance to make their escape and return home. The parents of the boy were Ignor ant of their whereabouts, and believ ed they had gone to Eastern Oregon to secure emp'oyment. The boys wero given the heaviest kind of work on the boat, and were treated In a cruel manner by some of the crew. .One of the boys had been sent aloft to work In the rigging, but being tim id In the rigging, the captan then plac ed him in another position, this time scrubbing for two white pigs that were on board the boat. He seemed to appreciate this job more than climbing the masts. Other boys tak en prisoners envied this lad, but af ter Seattle was reached they found their chance to desert tbe ship, and took, the opportunity of doing so, af ter five weeks' imprisonment. The boat upon nearlng Manila, lat er, sank with all the members of the r-crew, Including the captain Vink was among the disappointed young men unable to go over-seas. He has had much military experience, having been a member of the Oregon National Guaitf in 1906. After enlist ing the second time he was stationed at Port Angeles, Wash., as a deputy fire warden, where h received his discharge from the service. Wink had accompanied the 162nd V. S. In-fanfc-y as far as Camp Mills, N. Y., but owing to physical disability he was sent West. Wink declares he Is ready again to answer his country's call if needed at any time and any place. YOUNG LADY IS STRUCK BY AUTOMOBILE Ruth klllman, of 416 Fourth street, waa knocked down Thursday noon on Sixth and Main streets, by a machine driven by Evelyn Robinson of Set enth and Jackson and belonging to Guy Waldron of thla city. Miss Sklllman and Miss Ethel Frost were crossing the street at the Inter section of Sixth and Main when the Waldron car made a turn, coming from the south and turning at a pret ty fast clip to retu-n on Main street toward the woolen mills. Mis Frost noticed tho machine when It waa about to atrlke them and stepped to one aide, at the same time giving the alarm to Miss Sklllman, but it waa too late, and the machine hit the lat ter girl and knocked her to the ground, at the same time striking her ankle against the curb, spraining It and badly bruising her limb. She was Immediately removed to Jo Swartz's sto-e and later to Dr. Strickland's of fice, where she was attended. Wltnesse to the accident aay that it waa evident that the driver was ln- einerlenCAd. Stubbs of Molalla waa in Oregon City Saturray for the purpose of recordng his paper of honorable discharge from the United States ar my, recently received at Camp Lewis Mr. Stubbs served In Hospital Training Camp 35 and saw service in France from June 1, 1918, to July 8, 1919.
