The peaches are short throughout
Clackamas county, owing to the late
frosts,
Apple and plum will be of a fair
crop, but not a large a In former
years.
Grape are to be very plentiful, the
largest known In the history of the
county,
PORTLAND, Or., Aug. 29. Thnre
wore two feature to the livestock
market at the Portland Union atock
yurd this morning. One wan the ab
sence of sheep n the open market and
the other waa the fairly heavy run of
hnga which brought $17.60 a the top.
There wa a total of 1615 sheep re
ceived, but they were all under con
tract to the Union Meat company, and
did not do anybody else any good.
The hog run -waa very fulr, nearly all
of the day's receipts being disposed
of. No cuttle wore sold during the
forenoon and there were but 10 head
to bo offered.
Receipts were 10 cattle, 370 hogs.
1815 sheep, a total of 12 carload.

Dr. Hymn Gumming, of the Univer
sity of Arizona, In excavation Just
completed in Arizona and New Mexi
co. On the Navajo reservation near the
New Mexico-Arizona boundary, Dr.
Cummlngs broke Into caves of the an
cestors ot the Snake and Antelope
clans of the IIopl and obtained many
priceless relics.
Dr. Frederick W. Hod go, of the bu
reau of American ethnology, after com
pletlng extensive excavations at the
ancient Pueblo of Hawaikuh, near Za
nl, N. M., roports remarkable discos
erlos as to the ancient culture ot the
"seven cities ot Cobola," the first
towns seen by the Spanish conquerors.
Evidences were found ot cremation
and dismemberment of bodies upon
burial, and Dr. Hodge obtained a large
quantity of stone utensils and pottery
of rare design, weapons, cotton cloth
ing, looms, corn and beans estimated
to be 1000 years old. Beneath the
ruins of Hawaikuh were found those
ot an older city, the age of which can
only be guessed at.

Itena Mooney, recently acquitted here
of one of nine Indictment chorging
murder growing out of a bomb explo
sion last summer, wa denied liberty
on bafl today by Superior Judge Frank
H. Dunne. Two other superior court
Judge had agreed to accept bail on the
six Indictment pending before them.

Mr. Mooney must remain on in Jail,
where she ha been confined Ince the
explosion of July 22, 1916, which killed
