Then 1 borrowed the money and
telegraphed 11 to ber. Th next day
cam telegram number i. "I am alck
and bare nothing, telegraph money
this office, at one. Frelde.-
Then I telegraphed back the tickets
ere there. Whereupon I received
telegram No. 3. which said. "Southern
Pacific round about trip, dangeroua.
war time. Telegraph money, truatj
me lo buy ilcketa here. Rush. Fried."
Theae telegrama were all charged to
Mr. Notdurft Then came another
call for $15 more, which I was un
able to aend. but bad to stop her from
ending unpaid telegram. Where
upon I received another telegram
that Mrs. Palmgreen had left Cincin
nati for Oregon. Then came letter
number I. which la aa follow:
-Cincinnati. Ohio. June 30. 11.
Dearest Marie and family: Dear good
Marie. I received your two letters
without money yesterday, and today
your money order for $3. Hope I will
get the ticket sooner here, for It Is
going crooked with me here. You see
now I am here In Cincinnati. Ohio,
a young Spanish man took me and my
boy here. I met blm in Galveston.
Texas, where I was happy, but I had
to fall In love with him. It cost only
75 cents on the boat It was cheaper
that way. than to pay debts In Louis
ville. Ky, as I would have been thrown
out In the street, had I lingered there.
Oh, it took two weeks to hear from
you. had it not been for that Span
iard I would have been had off. Now
I am here and he does not come near
me. so I am terrible bad In it. I hope
to God you have sent the money by
telegraph, so we can come, then I
will leave this coming Saturday. Have
you not sent any, please telegraph
It at once for my dear sister, it takes
too long per post and one has trouble
getting it at the postotflce and I must
live. The longer I'm here the more
I owe and this lady holds my trunk
until I pay. So one hundred dollars
Is necessary to get my tmnnk, some
thing to eat and pay lodging. In
these two weeks I have suffered ter
rible. Yes, I hear from my sister
and when I got the letter, the land
lady stood there and looked 'at me
cross, then she got 84 and I got $1
Till that money comes and saves me.
Oh, had I not had your promise. I
should bunt (God for give me) my
death. Yes, Mr. Palmgreen was good,
heavenly good, but a good friend had
brought him into this bad luck and
the only way we can be happy Is that
I must come to you. Mr. Palmgreen
will come to his senses, take his busi
ness in New Orleans again and then
come to Oregon. He is without money,
too, but can bring himself throunh.
