CLACKAMAS ABSTRACT 4 TRUST COMPANY. Land Tttlt Examined. Abatracta af Title- Mad. Office over Bank of Oregon City. FORUM OFTliE PEOPLE Portland and Oregon City. OREGON CITY. Ore, Sept 26. (Ed itor of the Enterprise) A commercial traveler visited Oregon City last week. He represents a cigar firm. He said in substance: '1 have occasion to vis- It many of the leading towns In ash ington and Oregon, and find Oregon City In the front rank commercially. There Is more business done In my line In Oregon City today than In Vancon ver, Washinton. It Is one of tho best towns I know." The writer chances to be moderator of the Portland Baptist Ministers' con ference, and is familiar with conditions in that city. Over half of the working men belonging to the churches oi Portland are out of work, and do not know where work Is coming from. The decrease In American export trade l'.ir ing August was $77,000,000 under that of last yenr. Food stuffs almost main tained the level of the same mouth a year ago, the decrease being In manu factured goods. For months to come there will be no trade with Germany or central Europe. That with the allies will be.lurgely In food products, hence factories will not be liable to open un til new markets will be provided. Thus there Is little prospect of work for the thousands now fncing actual want. I know or three of the best churches in Portland, largely composed of working people, where the work is already seri ously hampered by the fact that so many of their supporters are out ot employment, and I will venture the as sertion that there Is not a church In Portland that does not already begin to feel the strain. Now conditions ore vastly different in Oregon City. More men several times over, have employment here than in Portland (according to popula tion). The churches of this city feel the strain very little. It is too bad that the man who is so bitterly dissat isfied with "dry" conditions In this town that he wants to see the old re gime come In again would not go somewhere else for a while, and try conditions in some of their "ideal" wet towns. The "wets" complaint of the -waste of Investments made In the destruc tion of the liquor traffic in Oregon. They say it is economic waste to de- stoy the $2,469,927 Invested in the breweries in Oregon. This investment has thrown Jui 610 men out of a job, and has lessened the Oregon payrotl by $384,537 dollars. How do I make that out? Take a couple of illustra tions of what I mean. For every $100 received the liquor business pays $7.35 in wages; while the carriage-making business pays $35.00 in wages upon each $100 taken in. For each dollar spent on beer the workmen get 7 cents and the farmer 10 cents for his prod uct. For every dollar spent on bread the workman gets 16 cents, and the farmer 37 cents. If the $2,469,927 in vested in Oregon breweries were In vested in almost any bther kind of manufacturing concern, at least 610 more men would be employed, and $84,537 more would be paid in wageB. It is hard to realize that for an In vestment of two and a half million dol lars onlv 204 men were employed in the breweries of Oregon last year. In Milwaukee. Wis.. $51,000,000 are in vested in liquor-making. Were the same amount Invested In any average business at the average wage, 25,000 more men would be nt work at an in crease of over $16,250,000, counting tb small sum of $650 per annum as the average wage. In present times of in dustrial stress the liquor business Is a great parasite, demanding vast Invest ments, giving little returns to its la bor employed, and no returns except miseries manifold to Its patrons. So the hope Is fading. I am sure, Miss Merchant, tnat you are not acquainted with any ot my neig fl oors or you would not suggest a prob able law suit over line fences. These people do not attempt to beg thn earth and while we may get Into a dispute over infant damnation, every one respects the personal rights ot everyone else, besides there Is a max im in this locality "That lawyers' houses are built upon the heads of fools." Miss Merchant claims that the ministers are far above me. I am truly sorry for thera if that Is true; some may, but I think there are a few with whom I can meet on the broad plane of human-fellowship, even if they disagree with every line I write, In a general way. Some, I think trv. as near as convenient, economic conditions permit, feel an Injury to any fellow creature is III to them. It will perhaps be new to Miss Mer chant, there was once a "hobo" on this ball ot mud and murd-T who taught us equality. Uut the hlubvr ups, the lawyers, ju-lgcs and "our btst people" gentrally went nf.tr his goat, quite success: ully, L.t it brought on uch an "eruuon as to tear a big bole !n the veil of distinction so that even the Dago soldiers could see the holy show. "You will probably have to come to one of these men In your hour of death," writes Miss Merchant. No doubt "It" writes from personal ex perience; If so, there is no gainsaying, 'Your vulgar ridicule and affected ut terances are no puzzle or delight or even Interest to the thinking man" my critic says; no, but It seems to have Interested one of the ladies and that is worth while. I am advised to "curry down the old mare." That spavin-legged flea bitten old cayuse, not being used to that sort ot a thing would be like my dear critic was when "It" read a few lines of truth for the first time, could not comprehend it and start a kicking. "Clean up your hen roost" is anoth er one of those "your money back if not thoroughly satisfied". Advice I am offered "freely." If "It" had read the important news of the time "It" would have known that some one cleaned up my hen roost for me without money and without price and the service was regarded as equal In worth to my lit tle critic who seems to have thrown all the usual formalities to the wind in the manner I am addressed by my front Christian name, by one of such tender years. 'Be assured John that Main street is no place for you as yet." I usually have a shirt-tail full of farm produce to peddle In order to quiet the dlsturb- ence in my internal econemy I use the proceeds so obtained. So please, Miss Merchant, mayn 1 1 come to town once in a while? JOHN F. STARK. ' Mr. Mulvey Not to be Deputy. OREGON CITY, Ore., Sept. 30, 1914. (Editor of the Enterprise) In the last issue of the Oregon City Courier there appeared a communication dated at Oak Grove, Oregon, in which the writer attempts to discredit my can didacy for the office of county clerk, by stating that If I am elected Mr. V. L. Mulvey, the present county clerk, would remain in my office as deputy, and in reply to the communication above mentioned I wish to state that Mr. Mulvey has recently been admit ted to the bar and has made all ar rangements to enter the practice of law on the first day of January next, and I wish to Inform the writer of the communication that should I be elect ed to the office of county clerk, Mr. Mulvey will not be a deputy In my oi- fice for the reasons stated above. I am unable to understand why any one should wilfully falsify, and in or der to ctfver up his delinquencies, fail to sign his name to the communica tion containing a wilful, false state ment, when the corrupt practices act requires communications of that kind to be served upon the adverse party fifteen days prior to Its publication.
