ACID CAUSES VERY SERIOUS ILLNESS
THOMAS READ, OF MOLALLA, IS
TAKEN TO PORTLAND
Molaila. Ore., April 10. (Special)
Thomas E. .Read, a farmer living near
Liberal, was taken to the hospital in !
Portland yesterday. Wednesday noon!
as he was unhitching his horses, his
sister-in-law, Mrs. Herbert Odean,1
who also lives at that ranch, saw him
fall to the ground and the horses run :
away. She rushed to his side and ;
found him In a dead faint. Then she
called his wife, Mrs. Marie Read, who !
came with Walter Finally. The sick
man was restored to consciousness.
About a week ago Mrs. Read accl-i
dently spilled a quart bottle of formal
dehyde on the kitchen floor. Being ;
overcome by the fumes she called her
husband In. Mr. Read spent consid- j
erable time trying to clean the disin
fectant up but did not wholly succeed. !
In doing this however he inhaled the
fumes of the formaldehyde and was
unable to speak for several hours. 1
Since that time he has been unable to
keep any thing on his stomach and it 1
is thought that the effect of the acid
on hihs stomach brought on the faint
Wednesday noon.
The women were frantic and Mrs.
Read hastened her husband to the hos
pital In Portland today. Mrs. Read
said that the doctors have told Mr.
Read for a long time that he needed
an operation for stomach trouble and
that now such an operation will prob
ably be absolutely necessary before
he recovers his health.
