They all made good wages while at work, but the time was short, one week. Mr. May is not going to have his hops picked this season. Typhoid fever Is in our midst again. Gay Godfrey is the victim. Ralph West also has the fever. Mrs. Grubbs. of Hillsboro, Is visit ing Mrs. Roberts this week. J. M. Gillett and J. F. Francis are out to Clarkes this week blasting down a well for George Kerbyson. Misses Mabel and Hazel Francis spent last Sunday viewing the sights In Vancouver, Wash. Helene Seeley, of Meldrum station, spent last Sunday here with her grand parents. Mr. Osmond, of Kalama, spent Sat urday evening and Sunday at home with his wife and two children. Mr. and Mrs. Fisher spent Sunday among relatives at Clackamas Heights. Mrs. Nora Carrico and son Floyd, of Superior Mill Co.. are In town this week. Mrs. Carrico has an abscess on her knee. Mr. Gerber and family spent last Sunday among relatives at Willam ette. Everhart & Hall had a runaway last week. The team started from the store, and after circling around the store and bell tower, ran down nearly to Seventh street, and ran Into a telephone post No one was hurt but the delivery wagon and harness were badly broken. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Jones, of Eldo rado, and daughter, Mrs. Mabel Fra zier, were doing business In town last V ednesday. Frank Everhart and bride were vis lting here two days last week. Mrs. Locke and children were call ing on friends 16 this burg one day last week. Chester Gorbett and family, of Col ton. moved into town last week. Bert Cummins and family moved out to Dix Bros.' sawmill and vacated the house for Mr. Gorbett. Mr. McGeehan has given his buggy a new coat of paint. Miss Mitchell had taught in the LaGrande schools for seven years previous to ner coming to Oswego. Mr. and Mrs. Wintler, of San Jose, Cat, are visiting Mrs. Wintler's mother, Mrs. J. W. Thomas. Mr. and Mrs. Segan have returned rrom Newport Mr. and Mrs. J. Gardiner have mov ed into their new home on Fourth street Dr. and Mrs. Rossiter have moved into their new home on Fourth street Misses Annie and Sarah Hill are visiting at Gervais, Ore. Mr. and Mrs. Lemery have return ed from Boise, Idaho, where Mr. Lem ery was engaged in business for sev eral years, and are again ocupying their home on C avenue and Third street Henry and Mrs. Mary Bichner have returned from the East, where they had been visiting friends and rela tives since April. Mr. and Mrs. Huffman have moved from Portland to Oswego. W. Bichner is building a beautiful home on First street and B avenue. Several new homes are being built along the river front on the old Con fer place. Mrs. Herman Pauling and children of Condon, Or., are visiting at the home of Mr. Pauling's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Pauling. Pleasant September weather on these heights while it is quite warm in the valley. Mr. and Mrs. Peck left for Canby, where they will stop a few days with relatives. The Griffiths Bros, have taken charge of the farm whlch they have recently purchased. Mr. Fully sold four cows to some Sprlngwater men. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Bert Shep nerd, September 11. an eight-pound daughter. Papa Shepperd has a wide smile equal to that of the Republi can nominee for President. Captain Branson and wife visited in Portland and St. Johns over Sun day, the captain filling the M. E. pulpit at St. Johns Sunday night. Mrs. Branson's uucle resides in St Johns. Mrs. Fully-aud son. Fred, and daugh ter, Catherine, visited at their former home at University Park Saturday and Sunday. Some of our citizens were In the huckleberry patch last week. A teacher for our school has not yet been hired. The roasting ears are ripe; water melons coming on slowly. Come out and hear Rev. Rlnehart's farewell sermons Sunday, December 20. The M. E. Conference convenes at Salem, September 20. Mrs. Larkins has been keeping one of the baby twins awhile since Mrs. Nichols' sickness. Some plowing has begun. STAFFORD. A sad accident which plunged our quiet neighborhood Into sorrow hap pened last Thursday. Mr. Brink, a veteran of the civil war. where he lost his left foot at the battle of Peters burg, went to Portland with horses and hack; accompanied by his little grandson, a boy of 7, to deliver a few sacks of oats at Johnson & Frey's stable. He delivered the oats, had his horses fed. got a lunch for himself and boy, and started for home at 11 A. M. At a little grocery store he stopped to get watermelon, and while waiting for it to be brought out took out his watch and was looking at it. He had changed places with little Homer, as his lame -leg somtlmes cramped so had nothing to brace himself with. A delivery wagon stood near. The driver hastened out Jumped Into his wagon and before he could take up the llnesi the impatient horse started. colliding with Mr. Blink's wagon box and tilting It up sufficiently to throw Mr. Brink out, as he had nothing to brace himself. He feu upon his head, fracturing his skull, and breathed out a few times after being carried Into the store. A doctor was immediately called, but life was extinct before he arrived, and he was taken to Dun nine's undertaking establishment to await the arrival of friends who nad been telephoned for, as the little grandson was 8ule to tell who they were and where a telephone should be sent. The funeral was held Saturday from the house at 2 p. m., and a large congregation gathered to pay the last respects to a good man. He was a kind husband and father, a good neighbor, an honest maan, and a) though he bad lived among us but a short time, all had learned to respec! his sterling worth. Besides the in mediate neighborhood, ten families, all from his old neighborhood In South Dakota, attended his funeral and gave testimony to his worth and the ts leaves a widow and three daughters Mrs. Nusbaum, of Stafford; Mrs. George Tiedeman, also of StafforJ, and Mrs. James Tiedeman, of Odwego, and eight grandchildren, to mourn his loss. Mr. Moore, a minister from Clackamas, preached the funeral ser mon. Mrs. John Schultz, from Port land, presided at the organ, while all sang the beautiful selections chosen for the occasion.,. His grave was made in the Oswego cemetery, and old com rades acted as pallbearers, and left a flag upon his resting place to mark the spot. Hop picking Is in full blast, Mr. Pomperlne's yard finished and others being picked. The quality is said to be good. Corn Is showing the lack of rain In that it does not fill solid. But a small amount of clover seed cut this season. The first blooms blasted. NORTH BEAVER CREEK. The weather has changed to be much cooler. Most all the folks from this burg that went to the bop yards have re turned home. Quite a bit of plowing and harrow ing are being done in this part of the country. Potatoes are also being dug. Charles Spence and family, of Carus, were visitors here Monday. William Harris, wife and baby are expected home from Caerphilly, Wales, the first of the week. Miss Anna Bluhm has gone to Port land to work. Miss Thena Howard walked to her home in Carus Sunday. Born, to the wife of Daniel Gunther, an eight-pound girl, September 13. Mrs. Mary Swales died at her home September 10, and was hurled at Pleas ant View Cemetery on the 13th, by Harding Grange, of which she was member. Rev. Mr. Rlnohart of Viola, preached the funeral sermon. A hus band ami large family of children are left to mourn the loss of a loving wife and mother. A worthy woman has gone to reap the reward of a life well spent. Frank Whlteman is carrying (he mail with his automobile and wo have to get out sooner to catch him now. Autos are getting thick as bikes were once on a time. George Clark. Sr., was out for a hunt the first of the week. Work Is progressing on the Grango horse barn and It will probably be fin ished before the fair. Mr. and Mrs. W. Heells were out from Tortland. Marsh Frakes is offering his stock tor sale with a view to moving away. CLARKES. Jack Rlngo left for Eastern Oregon last Saturday. He has poor health. W. II. Nottomlllor hauled two loads of gravel last week to put a concrete wall in his well. The elder of the German M. E. church had the quarterly meeting last Saturday and had a good preaching on Sunday. Yes. the Molalla Fair comes off on the 26th of September, at the old stand. T. A. McFaddln has a sunflower stalk with over sixty separate bloom Ing flowers hanging on, and It's a sight to see them all trying to face the sun. Died, at Molalla, last Saturday, the inrant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Looney. Rex W. Lewis and August Bergreme nave just returned from the hospital wnere they nave been spending severs weeks wrestling with typhoid fever. Eight enterprising Molalla farmers nave just purchased a new clover Duller. Dr. Powell, Jr., went to Portland last week and operated on one of Molalla's sons for appendicitis. The patient is now home and doing well. TWILIGHT. Florence McCord was visiting her sister in Portland last week. Roy Wilehart, of Portland, accom panied by a friend, has been visiting his aunts, Misses Emma and Anna Wilehart. Sam Hess, of Canby, visited at the home of George Schrelner last Sunday Mrs. Robinson and daughter Vernle, of Canby, were visiting friends here last Sunday. Dr. Schultz and wife anl William Schultz, of Summit Ranch, were visit ing at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Lazelle last Sunday. Warner Grange will hold Its annual alr Saturday, September 26. Great preparations are being made and bd exhibit will be made at the County Fair and Warner will make an effort to place an exhibit that will carry off the first prize. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Sailing, of Cur rlnsvlllo. celebrated their fourth wed ding anniversary at their homo on Monday evening. Many guest wore present to extend their best wishes. During the evening a delicious lunch eon was served. Arthur Herman, of Corvallls. who has been clerking In the Surface drug store, has returned to his homo and Is now engaged In business with his father at that place. Dr. H. V. Adlx has moved his family Into their attractive new bungaluw. The living room opens from the reception hall, and the din Ing room with 'an arch opens Into the living room. The long veranda on tho east side of the house adds to the at' tractlveness. The interior is being stained, and when finished It will lie one of the handsomest of bungalows. The finishing of Interior Is the handi work of W. H. Boner. Some of the features of the Adjx home are the built-in cupboards. It Is the Intention of Dr. Adlx. who has come to Estacaila to make his future home, to also have a tennis court and croquet ground on the northeast side of the house, making a most desirable home place. Dr. and Mrs. Adlx, who have resided at Estacaila for a short time are pleas ed with their new home town, and the former Is meeting wits success in his profession. The building occupied by W. A. Heylman. banker. Is being repainted and presents a neat appearance. Miss Pruner, who has been spend ing the summer at her home In Rid dles, near Roseburg, returned to this place Sunday evening, and commenc ed her duties as teacher in the public school. Dr. Adlx was summoned to Caza- dero Sunday night, where an Italian workman had his throat cut. The man said that he was held up by a man, but the supposition Is that he had been engaged In a fight with a fellow countryman. Ten stitches were required to close the wound, and it Is thought he will recover. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Ilippey ami Mr. and Mrs. Walter riizgeraiu, 01 Philadelphia, are at Cazadero, and are stationed at the Lodge. Mr. Rlppey and Mr. Fitzgerald, are well known consulting engineers of - Philadelphia ami are here on a business trip. Judge Gill has moved rrom mis place, and Is now engaged in teach ing the Porter Bchool. The Rebekah Lodgo or mis piace will celebrate their 57th anniversay on Saturday evening at the I. O. O. F. hall. Judge Thomas F. Ryan, of Ore eon City, will be present and deliver an oration. L. E. Belflla will favor the audience with a cornet boIo. Other numbers will be on the program, ami followed by a banquet Mr. Scott will soon move his lamny from his residence near the school house to the rooms over Sparks' store, and the house he vacates will be oc cupied by Prof. James and family. Mr. .lames Is at present staying at the home of Mr. Scott, and his family are n Oregon City visiting with his par ents. Mr. and Mrs. D. A. James. The Ladles' Aid Society of the M. E. Church will hold Its regular meet ing on Friday afternoon nt 2 o'clock at the home of Mrs. M. B. Parouna- gain. ' Sunday school will be hold nt tne M. E. The party also visited Yellowstone Park for throo weeks, and tho forest re serve adjoining, whoro they saw 310 head of elk and other wild gamo. Harvey Eccles, formerly of tills placo. has returned from California. Harding Grango Fair will take place on October 6 aud 7. Many people of this placo are planning to attend this year. The fair given by this grange last year proved most successful affair. Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Stolnman and wife, of Evansvlllo, Indiana, who have been visiting with tho former's bro ther, 8.. P.
