Miss Vera Kayler, of MontavilU. Is visiting relatives at this place for a week. Isaac GIpson was raising a barn for K. A. Shaver last week, when a gust of wind came and the structure collapsed. No one was hurt In the fall, although two men had to get a move on to free themselves from the timbers John Stubbs, R. F. D. carrier No. 2, and wife, are spending a couplt of weeks at the .Springs. Mrs. Nancy Engle Is also camped with them. Mrs. Engle has the honor of being one of the first white women to visit these Soda Springs, after the discovery of this mineral wonder or the county. MARKS PRAIRIE. And still we have hot weather for harvesting. Nearly all Fall sown grain is cut and our farmers will begin stacking Monday. George E. Oglesby and sons have just returnel from their outing and report a fine time. They will soon go to Roaring River after huckleberries. Mr. and Mrs. Otis Morris were vis iting their sister, Mrs. Kraus, Sunday. Henry Deels has a new threshing outfit and will start threshing this week. The county surveyor has been doing some surveying for A. B. Cole the past few days. v Several people went to New Era to attend the Spiritualist camp meeting. Feed is drying up and our dairies are feeding green corn that Is those who have it The apple crop here is good and very free from vermin this season. Several parties went to the Soda Springs from here Sunday. Hop pickers are already writing to find out when hop picking will begin. We think about September 8 will be as soon as anyone here will commence. Our gardens are drying up and the potato crop will be very short here If it does not rain in a few days. CLARKES. Mr. Stewart and Mr. Davis have both stacked some grain. Threshing machines will start In Hi fsw days. Mr. Gregory will begin to harvest his teasel crop Wednesday. He has a fair crop this year. Mr. and Mrs. H. O. Inskeep attend ed Spiritualist campmeeting at New Era Sunday. Mr. Brown's prune drier Is very near completed. M. E. London is constructing a new granary for Eph Jones. That's right, we all need a good place for our grain. LOGAN. At the last meeting of Harding Grange it was decided to hold the fair on the Cth and 7th of October, the stock show to be on the latter date. Two houses on Mr. Purdy's place on the Clackamas, occupied by Mr. Purdy and J. T. Mason, burned down last week. Both of them were away when the fire started, but Mr. Mason return ed in time to throw out about half of the household effects. He says it Is rather strenuous work for a man 72 years old to fight fire. One of J. T. Mason's sons has taken a claim in Lincoln County and "Tip" Is intending to move there In October. W. M. Kirchem has sold his inter est In the farm to his brother Hugh. J. C. Kirchem and wife and L. H. Kirchem have gone for a ten days' trip to Ogle mountain. J. C. Corliss and son are building a house for A. Swales. Ml) LI NO. Another week has passed and still old Sol shines as brightly and with as much heat as ever. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Woodalde have returned from their camping trip at Soda Springs. Mn. 0 bm a visiting her mother, Mrs. Daniels, at present. Mr. and Mrs. I. O. Dlx and Charlos Freeman were visitors at the homo of Mr. J. L Evans on Sunday last. Mr. Woodslde, Sr., has sold his farm. Some or the prominent farmers of this vicinity went to Wllhoit Springs last Sanday and said they had a lovely time. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Holman return- ed home after spending part of their vacation on the farm. Mr. and Mrs. Hub Bowman made a flying trip to Woodburn to see rela- tives. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson and family were guests of Mr and Mrs. H. S. Ram-, sby last Monday. I. H. Larklns, of Marquam, Is put ting up hay on his old place at Meadow Brook. .-.-.iJl EAST MOUNT SCOTT. The farmers of this vicinity are all through haying and are cutting grain. There were no services at the church last Sunday, as most of the people attended the camp meeting at Jennings Lodge. Messrs. W,ill and Ernest Ulrlch left last Saturday evening for Lata, Wash., where they will work during the har vest season. Mrs. Becker's sister, Mrs. Bishopp, of Lents, is here for a short stay. Some one is getting quite free with the use of fire arms, as Messrs. Ulrich and George Held had each a cow shot with buckshot. One of the cows Is expected to die. The young ladles of this burg have erected a tent at Jennings Lodge call- (ed "Mt. Scott Wigwam Mr. Ulrich and Mr. Rebstock are busy stacking grain. Miss Alberta. The Wilhoit Springs seems to be well patronized now, there being about 50 or more tents beside renters and hotel boarders. There was a great throng of people visiting there the past j two Sundays. Herman & Kayler will start their clover huller in a 'f days. All will be anxious to have their clover hulled first. We learn that they have bought a new stee separator Mrs. J. H. Quinn and Mrs. G I. Q,linn were callers at the home of Mrs Everett Judd last week, and spent a pleasant evening. DOVER. Has any body heard from Dover for the last two weeks? No. Well, I'll tell you why. Tour correspondent has been working for two weeks. Now what are you laughing at? I have, sure, and so has every one In Dover. Haying is Just about finished. Only a few have hay In the field yet. Some have begun cutting grain. Wheat and Oats will be better than an average crop here. A great many blackberry pickers and campers are enjoying themselves in these parts now. Mrs. A. J. Kitzmller Is running a blackberry cannery in Dover now. Every year she cans berries for her many Portland friends, who think that the wild blackberries of Oregon are Just about the best fruit on earth. She has canned nearly 500 quarts already, and expects to can as many more. Work on the North Eagle Creek road is being graveled. This Is a new road, and one that will be a big help to the country. This road would have been made years ago, but for a ledge of rock that blocked the way. Some estimates have been placed as high as $1000 to do the work. These estimat ors will look foolish when it is known that about $100 is all that will be re quired to pass this ledge of rock. Why James Lee Got Well. Carter. Mrs. Richard Warren and Mrs. C. A. War ren have gone to Cannon Reach for a two weeks' outing. Mr. C. H. Dauchy was In Gladstone this week. Ho Is much Improved. Mrs. Robert McAlpIn and son huve gone for a two mouths' vacation. The contract for the heating plant for the school house was let to the .1. C. Bayer Co.. of Fort land, Tuesday. Great preparation Is being made for the annual picnic of the commercial travelers' association, to be held at Gladstone Park. Mrs. C. O. T. Williams was visiting In Gladstone Tuesday. Miss Rose Mulkey left Wednesday for Vale, In Eastern Oregon, where she will teach In the high school the coming year. Miss Mulkey will make her home with her brother, Ijjst Tuesday evening the mombers of the Christian Church met In the Tabernacle to discuss the question oi building the new church. Plans for a building costing 2"u0 were adopted. Rev. Hulkey. tho pastor, says that If $1000 can be raised ho knows where he can get the balance. The members expect to finish the entire exterior of the building this Fall ami at least finish the Interior of the basement for services this Winter. There are 57 members In the organization now. Sev eral more have made known their de sire to Join and there are several fam ilies coming here from other parts of the United States. Over 30 women met at the home of Mrs. H. S. Salisbury last Wednesday afternoon and organized the X. L. Club. The officers are: Mrs. H. C. Salisbury, president; Mrs. Blount, vice-president; Mrs. William Johnson, secretary, and Mrs. H. E. Cross, treasurer. The club is formed for the purpose of aiding and advising the Gladstone school board and in order to work for the betterment and uplift of the new school. They have planned to have an Ice cream social In a few days. The proceeds will be the beginning or a "hooX plano fund TWILIGHT. Miss Rachel McCord, who has been In Alaska for some time for her health, is expected home soon. Walter Meade will build a house on ihis land below the Kelland place soon. Th teams have been laid off of the South End road for a few days, while , , hi , , many younK people from .j,ere will attend the ball in Canemah Park next Saturday, given by the Ore gon City band. Miss Hattie Irwin, of Barlow, was visiting Mrs. Geo. Lazelle this week. Mr. Martin has his new barn com pleted and filled with hay. Mrs. Schreiner's brother, Jay, and wife, have been visiting her this week. George Wilson has sold his place and moved to New Era, and Mr. Graves will be our new neighbor. . James Hylton has returned from his visit in The Dalles, and reports a very enjoyable time. Many improvements are being made in this section, and among those who are busily engaged are, Mr. Bradtl, who will build a new house on his place soon. Mr. Bremmer has his barn finished, and Is now rebuilding his house. Newman's will build on their place below Kelland's this Sum mer. Mr. Snooks Is building an addi tion to bis house that will greatly im prove the appearance. MOUNTAIN VIEW. The sound of the carpenters' ham mer is heard this week. Ed Gottberg & Co. are remodeling the machine shop, lately ocupled by Mr. Kleinsmith. Dlx Brothers are putting up a few new buildings at the lumber yard on Roosevelt street. Mrs. Gerber spent Monday evening at Mount Pleasant with her brother, S. T. Roman, who Is in a critical con dition. Mrs. Hall spent last week out at the Superior saw mill with her sister, Norah. Mr. McGeehan and family are rus ticating near Mt. Hood this week, and Mr. Mack la doing their chores. Rosco Clark rode out to Molalla Tuesday with the Farr brothers and brought In a band of cattle. Miss Mabel Albright is at Jefferson this week visiting with her grand mother, Chris Bullard was married last week to Miss Maud Bradley, and Monday evening the boys gave them an old fashioned charivari. Messrs. J. M. Gillett and Bert Cum mins are digging a well for Allen Frost this week. Mr. and Mrs. Lewellen spent last Saturday at the coast. William Wickham is on the sick list again this week. Grandma Beattle and Miss Welsse . were calling on friends in this burg last week, Friday, I Mrs. Dora Shelly returned home from Alaska last week. Revenue Jimpoctora of Portland the other day algned the communication "A Cltl.en," and advised them that liquor was being sold In Estacadu and they had better conioout and look Into affairs. An olllcer arrived the early part of the week. Inspected the two places that had been saloons before the town went dry and was not able to find any Infraction of the law. He also visited tho KhIiicikIu pharmacy. It appears that the government license of this place expired on July 1, and us Mr. Surface does not wish to sell malt or spirituous liquors he neglected to renew the license and Instructed the clerk to refuse to fill any prescrip tions that would violate the U. S. lawM. Hy some mistake or thoughtlessness a prescription containing alcohol was tilled on July 3, without the knowledge of Mr. Surface. Mr. Surface says that when the Inspector called for his pro , scrlptlon file ho was ready to bet live hundred dollars that he hud a clear bill.
