Ohio and New York provide the Re nuhllcan narty this year with candi dates for President and Vice-president of the United States. Ohio, the motn er of presidents, has asaln been suc cessful in placing in the field her can didate, who was so heavily backed by the administration, headed and guid ed by Theodore Roosevelt, that oppo sition was futile. Even me ioua noise." otherwise known as .1. Bourne, Jr., subsided at last and has taken steamer for Europe, where he will spend the Summer without coming back to Oregon to line up the State ment No. 1 legislators for J.,wrge Chamberlain. Some grumbling has . been heard about Mr. Taft by those who wanted Roosevelt, Hughes, et al., but it is believed that the Republican national ticket will be generally supported by Republicans, even in Oregon, which has a Republican majority, taccoru ing to the registration books), of about 30.000, yet persists in electing Democratic governors and United States senators. Of course, we all wanted Theodore, but next to him, what is the matter with the Presl dent's own personal choice. If there is anything the matter with William H. Taft, would Roosevelt be for him with all of his acknowledged forceful vieor? Certainly not. So we have the ticket. Mr. Taft is a big man, physically and mentally He has done great things. His poli tical and public record is first-class. not only at home, bu abroad and in our insular possessions. He some times talks too freely and puts his foot in his mouth, but this will not cost him many votes. Aside from Roosevelt, he is the best man we could have nominated. He is safe and sane, and the country needs such men at the helm. Here in Oregon it is different. Mr. Taft's ninning mate ranks high in business affairs. He is a success ful politician and has long been a power in the national house of repre sentatives. He is probably the ablest parlimentarian in that body of fam ous men. He comes from a state that has so many votes in the electoral college that it will be felt in Novem ber. Against this man Taft, comes .Wil liam J. Bryan, who will try for the third and last time to become Presl dent on the Democratic ticket. Around the courthouse there will be little change on the first of July. William H. Mattoon succeeds Thomas B. Killen as a county commissioner, but the clerk, sheriff, recorder, school superintendent, treasurer and survey or have been re-elected and Assessor Elect Jack does not succeed Mr. Nel son until January. The county officers will profit to the extent of six months salary because of the passage of the new law, changing the time of bien nial elections from June to Novem ber, and the men who commence a new tern in July will hold until Jan uary, 1911, with the exception of school superintendent an J assessor, who are elected for four years. 1908 will register the greatest crop of cherries and berries that Oregon has ever produced. Quality is mag nificent, quantity almost unlimited, and whi!e humanity is enjoying this fruit the maturing hay crop insures a big increase in the dairy output, which has been greatly benefitted by as grxd Spring pastures as were ever known in thi3 section. Residents of the Northwest should take pains to see that their Eastern country friends are made familiar with the unequalled conditions which make dairying so profitable here. Secretary C. H. Marsh, of the Pen dleton Commercial Association Is en thusiastic over the future of his city and Umatilla County, and advises that his soliciting committee will not cease their efforts until they have secured J8000 to give publicity to the resourc es and advantages of the County. It is only natural that Wall Street just now should pay more attention to politics than to anything else. How ever, there have been some cuirent developments of consequence, but the most important helpful elements, and SUMMER SCHOOL BARCLAY Bldg. L the prospects are bright Indeed, ema nate from the crop situation. One es timate has It that this year's farm products will probably go up to the stupendous total of an eight billion dollar viilue. This forecast. Is the of ficial calculation of the staiisMelati of the national department of Agricul ture. Iist week the annual conference of the United Brethren Church was hold at Oregon City and for five days dele gates from nil parts of Western Ore gon and Western Washington were visitors here. Had it not been for tho newspapers, however, the public would have been none the wiser. This may seem trivial to some, but la only another argument for the establish ment of a Commercial Club, where guests of tho city may bo made wel come. i. - j-.i Judge McUrUle is to be congratulat ed on tho soundness of his decision In dissolving the temporary injunction restraining the Hawley Pulp & Paper Company from proceeding with work that will mean millions of dollars to Oregon City.
