Hut, with It all, Clackomoa county Is
really fortunate In one respect. Consid
ering tho true value of Its land, manu
facturing Institutions and extensive re
sources, this county Is bearing a small
portion of the sttae's expenries. There
are a number of other cnajities In the
state, no more valuable thun Clacka
mas, and a number of them for which
the writer would not exchange Clack
amas county with considerable to boot
thut contribute more toward the state's
expenses. For Instance, the following

centage and the amount of the state

Place Blame Where It Beloaga.
While the taxes this year are rather
excessive, yet the taxpayer should not
place the blame other than where It be
longs. We trust that this somewhat ex
tended statement of facts will coirect
many of the erroneous Impressions that
exist In the minds of taxpayers The
county officers have fulfilled their prom
ises by cutting the levy In two. follow
ing the doubling of the assessable val
ues of the county. From the firures that
have ben presented In the foregoing por-at-nphs,
It will be seen that the nct ial
amount of money to be rnlsed for coiuity
purposes will be slightly less thun wns
r-iired a year ago.
Civs Officers Deserved Credit.
Do not unduly criticise the preaont of
ficers, but give them the credit for
having during the last two years Riven
C'.nckamns county the best administra
tion of affairs that the county has ever
had. The county has been managed
since July, 1902, by the present officers
as economically as ever before In the
history of the county. At any rate, the
expenses have been appreciably reduc
ed from tho record made by the pre
ceding administration of Clackamas
county affairs by Fusion officers. The
expenses of tho county under the pres
ent Republican officers have been re
duced from 19.536. 66, In 1901. to 37.
223.30 for the year 1903. During the
same length of time the present admln
tatratlon of county affairs cancelled
a road Indebtedness of 137,000, and in
the payment of outstanding warrants
gained three months. All county war
rants Issued prior to December 1, 1901,
have been redeemed. These cold figures
should quite completely disprove the
charges of extravagance that are being
made against the present officers by
Democrats.

Obituary.
Mabel V. Woodle, eldest daughter of
J. P. and Lydla A. Woodle, of Eagle
Creek. Oregon, died at her home April
22, 1904, after a short Illness, and was
burled in the Olbeon cemetery April
54. 1904.
Deceased was born February IS, 1891.
Mabel was a very good and industrious
girl, obedient to her parents, kind and
affectionate to her brothers and sisters,
and loved by all who knew her. She
waa converted February IS, 1904, and
was loyal to God.
She leaves behind to mourn her death
besides her parents, five brothers and
three slaters, who have the sympathy of
all.
A precious one from us baa gone,
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place Is vacant In our home
Which never can be filled.
God In His wisdom has recalled
The boon His love had given.
And though the body moulders here,
The soul is safe In heaven. ,

office at the least possible cost to the
taxpayers. This is the fact and the
records of the county will back up the
statement There have been many in
stances during Mr. Holman's term when
he dispensed with the holding of an in
quest while it has been the experience
of Clackamas county that the average
coroner would have worked up a case
and collected fees for the same.
FOR COMMISSIONER.
The Immense vote that T. B. Klllin,
Republican nominee for county commis
sioner, will receive will be a surprise
even to the warmest friends of that
gentleman. Mr. Klllin is a substantial
farmer residing In the south end of the
county. He has served the people of
Clackamas county well during his first
term, and with the other members of
the Court managed to conduct the busi
ness of the county more economically
than it has been done in years. "Tom"
Klllin will be found up towards the top
of the column in figuring Republican
majorities.
FOR JOINT REPRESENTATIVE.
O. W. Holcomb, Jr.. candidate for
Joint representative from Multnomah
and Clackamas counties, is a success
ful business man of Portland, and will
receive the full party vote in Clackamas
county.
