In the following letter is one written by Charles A. Fitch, editor of the Herald, written one year ago, which will be interesting leading matter to the Demo crat of Clackamas county : Albany, Or., April 2. (To the Edi tor.) The fusionits have met and placed before the voters of this state a ticket composed of men who are almost entire strangers to the average citizen. From now on until June, stump speakers and penny-a-liners will be Introducing these several gentlemen to tha public. Allow uie, a a straight I'opuliat, to say a few worda regarding Mr. Charles A. Fitch, of Oregon City, the fuiioa candidate for state printer. Until a very few weeks ago. Mr. Fitch was t thoroughbred ropunsi, standing Irom all appearance, squarely on People's party principles and fighting bravely the trades combi nation of the unscrupulous machine. But alas I Pennoyer went to Oregon City, or at least Pennoyereaqne "idea" inoculated the Falls City air, and Fitch fell from the straight path be bad so long traveled. Not that I question his right to change bis views on any subject, for 'tis said, "Wise men change, but fools never, but the manner is what brings foith my objection. If Mr. Fitch desired to torn Democrat, Fusioniat, or what not, he ia only exercising bis right as an American citizen, but I deny that he i privileged to juggle with the des tiny of more than one party at a time. I repeat, if Mr. Fitch deiired to join the Democratic party bate it aa he did it waa his privilege. And I know he haled the Demosratic party only few months ago, though today he stands aa its candi date for state printer. The following letter which he wrote to me before the "office bee" stung him, proves that he then despised monopolies, even office seeking ones. Here is the letter: Okeoon City, June 3, 1897. J. A. Finch: Dear Sir: You will see by my Uaue of tlii week that I am not io sympathy with the Republican Aid society, organized in your city yesterday. I feel sure it will cut a very email swath in this county. Will you do me the favor to at once give me all of the infor mation you have acquired regarding it. Let me aduiouibh you alao to not deal too much in personalities or bitter con troversy in your just fight againt a pre tended Populist the editor of the Imprint btick to the text the princi ples and diaplay aa little vindictiveneaa as posmble. At beat we shall loae some of our beat forces hy this new deal of Cooper's. Let us have as little warfare as possible in oar own ranks. These are times for patriotic devotion to piinciple. Democracy may fool the people once more on the popular belief in bimetalism We may not be a pie to avert the result- revolution but so help me God, I will I never conaent to become a party to the crime of delivering my following to the Democrat. I am poor, but I will be Bight poorer before I betray an honest but politically iitnorant people. Yours for durin' tho war, Cuarlbb A. Fitch. I will let the reader draw his own con clutdona and will conclude by asking a few questions. Was Mr. Fitch in earnest in June, 1897, and until a few weeks ago? What caused this sudden change of base by one who bad labored so hard to build up the People's party ? Was it the promise of office? Who can tell ? J. A. Finch. For the benefit of Mr. Finch, it has been suggested that Fitch and U'Ren are weaving the silver blanket for the pur pose of fattening themselves at the govern ment crib. Just how the Populists will enjoy the last clause of the letter wherin Fitch says: I am poor, but I will be a sight poorer before I be tray an honest but politically ignorant I'KOI'LB. It may transpire on June 6th that the Populist are not aa politically ignorant people aa Fitch says they are. We shall see. Theu aud Now. The following is a letter written by U'Ren on January 10th this year. We publish it for the benefit of the Clacka mas couuty Democrats. Bakkr City, Or., Jan. 10, 1898. ' Mr. J. 6uui. County Fchool Superintendent Stark weather is sending out orders to the clerks of the various school districts for the first apportionment of the county school fund for the year. This i the 50 general appropriation tor each district, and another apportionment will be made later, when more taxes are paid in, making two mora allotment of school money for the preaent year. Aside from the $."0 appropriation, the county fund will bring in a little more than $3 per cpiU for each child of school age in Clackamas county. Ihe Hop Crop.
