When thi same road had boeu wet to a
great depth by continued rains, and

tho dlffereure wa again largely in fa
vor or me narrow urea, in tlm caae a
load of 8,300 pound was drawn with
the sunie draft ou nurrow tire a a
9,000 pound load on tbe broad tire.
These two are the only condition of
the dirt road iu which the narrow tirea
ahowed to advantage via: When the
surface is too wet, soft or sloppy to
compres under the broad tire, and ia
underlaid with a hard, dry subatrutuni.
Iu tho nsturo of the case this condition
of rouil nurture ia of short duration. If
the rain crane, a few hour of sun in
tho spring, summer or fall will dry the
surfaco materially, or so that it will
compres and puck under the broud
tire, enabling n given loud to be drawu
over it surface with the wido wheel
with much leas druft than ou the uur
row ones. If more ruin fulls, this sub
stratum is softened, and the nurrow
tires cut deeper, resulting iu a greutly
increased druft, compurod with the
broud tire.
The second condition of dirt roads fa
vorable to narrow tires is when tbe mud
i deep and stiff, and sticky enough to
gather ou the broad wheels. A careful
observation for tho last two years has
shown a stiff, poorly drained clay rond
to be in this condition but a few time,
and than for but a short whilo.
On meadow and pastures the results
have been strikingly lu fuvor of the
broad wheels. When the meadows ore
soft, from 8,000 to 4,000 pounds may
be hauled on the broad wheels with the
same draft as that required to haul a
loud of 9,000 pouuds ou the nurrow
wheels. Ou stubblo land and plowed
ground the results ore favorable to the
broad Wheels.
The experiments practically domon
strnto that tho imprcssiou tbut tbe broad
wheels in the average condition of road
will increnso the draft is wrong.
Iu round numbers the sum of 30,
000,000 is paid out each year for the
maiutenanoo of our publio roads outside
of the cities. This estimate does not
include the cost of permanent improve
ments. All improvements must come
from expenditures above this amount.
It ia well known that the narrow tired
vehicles are among the most destructive
agents known to tbe publio highways.
These publio roods may be maintained
at a greatly reduoed expense by substi
tuting 6 inch tires for tbe inch tires
now used. Inasmuch as the cost of the
wide tired wheels is not greater than
that of those now in uso; also consider
ing that they are as durable aa the nar
row tire wheels, and the fact just dem
onstrated that the druft ia not in
creased by their use, but In tho nvorage
cose materially decreased, remove the
last objection aguiust the gradual adop
tion of tho broud wheel on the furms,
the country roads and city streets. For
the furm and country roads the tires
should not be less than 6 inches wide.
For th city street 4 inches should b
the minimum width.

The Marketing Point
OF CLACKAMAS COUNTY
The factory towns of tho East aro noted
for affording the best market to the neigh
boring farmers and gardeners in proportion
to the population of any of the towns in
that section. The reason for this is that
the people of these towns have a fixed in

and, as a consequence, they are liberal buy
ers, paying cash for all their purchases.
