The committee on platform made two rejiorta, Sol Hirach presenting the ma jority report, which i pracltcally the Ohio platform on finance, while Claud Gated presented a minority report favor- inn a cold standard unoouivocally. The minority report ol Mr. Gatch was re jected by a vote of 10S to 129 and the majority report was then adopted. The following is the platform as adopted: TUX PLATFORM. The representatives of the republicans of the state of Oregon, tn convention atwembled, call attention to the condi tion of industry and business through out the country as a proof of the nec essity of the policy of the republican party, under which there was general proH?ritv during thirty years. We ro-firu the principles of the re publican national platform of 1892, and assert that tbe results that have followed the change docreeJ by the election of that year have jnstfied our protest against the national policy adopted by the demo cratic parly. Protection We believe that the gov ernment should have ample revenue, with a sullicient surplus over ordinary expenditures to provide for the coast de fenses, for the steady building up of the navy, and for the constant reduction of the public debt. We believe that the present taritl, with its lowered rates and its destructive and dishonest system of undervaluations, and discrimination as to localities, should be teplaced by one framed on protective principles, sim ilar to that of tbe McKinley bill and ar ranged to jtive ample protection to American industry, and to restore the reciprocity policy of James G. Blaine. We have always given protection to shipbuilders. In late years we 'have neglected to protect our shipowners. We believe the time has come to return to the policy of Washington and Ham ilton, w hich, by discriminating duties in favor of American bottoms, secured 90 per cent of our carrying trade to Ameri can ship8, and which, if now restored, would again revive our shipping and cause American freights to be shipped to Americans. Finance The American people, from tradition and interest, fayor bimetalism, and the republican party demands the use ol both gold and silver as standard money with such lestrijtations and under such provisions, to be determined by legislation, as will secure tbe main tenance of the parity ol values ot tne two metala so that the purchasing and debt-paying power ol the dollar, whether of silver, gold or paper, shall be at all times equal. The interests of the pro ducers of the country, its farmers and workingmen doniand that every dollar, ' paier or coin, iaiucd hy the uovernniei.t 'hImII he aa good nn any other dollar. : Klectlon of Senators Ileaolved, that we earnenlly endorse the proponed amendment to tli eoncliliition of the United States providing for the election bf L'niied Stales Senator by popular vote, recently reorted from Hie com mi i tee on privilege, and elections hy kWiiiator Mitchell, um now pending con sideration in the I'nited States Ketinte. Cascade Keserve Unsolved, That the auplicalioii of the Oregon ileleiration in congress to the president of the L'niied Htates and now pending before him, praying a modification of his proclama tion creating the Cascade Forest Reserve, is hereby earnestly approved, and we appeal to the president to grant the . prayer of our delegation in congress. j "Fi-hing We real'ze the importance and magnitude of the (iitlunit industry on the Columbia river, and would recom mend that some provision be made for a state hatchery for artificial propagation and that the law regulating the clore season tie rigidly enforced. "Rebate to Settlers That we endorfe the effort of our representative In con gresa to secure re-payment to settlers of Oregon of the excess of 11.2-5 per acre wrongfully collected by the government on land located in the limits of the un earned Northern Pacific railroad land giant now forfeited. Canal The construction of tbe Nicar agua canal is of the highest importance to the American people, both as a meas ure of national defense and lo build up and mainiain American commerce. It is moreover of secial importance to our Pacific states, and we demand its com pletion ai steedily aa possible by the government of the United State. Pensions We hereby endorse the action of our senators and repretentivea in congress in their endeavor to secure granH of pensions to Indian war veter ans. Retrenchment We pledge the repub lican party to rigid economy in the ex penditure of uubli: money, to the reduc tion of excessive salaries, and the abol ishment of the lee system wherever possible, and ol all useless commissions; and believe Ibat no appropriation should be made to any school or charitable in stitution not under control of the atate; and oppose the incorporation -Into the eeneral appropriation bill ol item for the expenditure of public money not au thorized by law. Immigration We demand enactment of rigid restrictions on foreign immigra tion both for protection of ctir country against illiterate and vicious classes from foreign countries and for protection of our labor and preservation to our own people of our national domain. International Improvements We com mend the policy of the republican paity in relation to internal improvements, and, in particular, in opening our water ways to commerce, and we denounce the illiberally of the democratic party in these matters. Resolution. To the Worshipful Master, Warden1) and Brethren of Mullnoirah Lodge No. 1, A. F. and A. M.
