It vos "steamer day" at Sitka, and amid all tho jovons stir and exoiteiiumt that the monjbly boat brxniht was one forlorn, unhappy man. Tom Douglas watohd his frionds as thoy enflorl.v opmd their lottora and listened with j assumed interest to the bits of news they Vow auxions to share, fitr at Sitka the population throngs to the wharf whoa ' the steamer's whistle is he:ird and waits tho coming of the ship and thedistribn- ) tiou of the mails. The people crowd in- j to the tiny postoffioe on the dock and watch impatiently for the longed for j home letters. j But Tom's home letter was not a j comfort to him. "Well, she is really j coming, he thought, "a month from today, if the steamer is on time. I wi 11 tie a married man; worse luck. How can I ever tell Natalia, dear little girl I I wouldn't willingly hurt her tender feelings for f 1,000,000, as hard np as I am." And Tom whistled rnrfnlly. Tom Douglas was a naval officer and before being stationed at Sitka he had boea on duty a winter in Washington, where he plunged into society with that gay abandon that only a sailor knows, for after three years at sea a young fel low is auite readv for the rosh and whirl of the gay capital All bouses ! were open to the handsome lieutenant, j but there was one where he was espe- i cially welcome. The hostess was a pret- J ty widow of some 20 or 2 years of age. I Her husband, who had died soon after j their laurriue, seemed not to have had 1 a very strong hold on her affections, for t after mourning him decorously for a ' year she blossomed into the gayest of the gay, and her house became a center ; for the young officers who had been the friends of her husband. It was there that Tom spent most of his time, Ee dropped in during the morning and discussed the newest gos sip or the latest magazines and came in for a cup of tea in the afternoon and re mained till her cozy parlor was empty save for himself and her. "Are you going to the assembly to night? he would ask. "Will yen be there, Tom?" Mrs. Deer- ing had such a good fellowship way of nsing her friends' first names. "Yes, I presume, so. " "Well, then, I am going," the little widow would reply. And that was the way the winter ! passed, Tom running in at all hours, privileged to smoke or read, to talk or ' listen, the most indulged of all hc-r ! callers. When his orders came for his ' immediate remuval to Alaska, he put , the document in his pocket and went as usual to the cheery home of Mrs. Deer ing. He told her the news and was real- I ly surprisod and flattered by her recop tion of it. She took both his hands in : hers, and the tears gathered in her bright I eyes. "Oh, Tom," she said, "I hate to have j you go." j Now, it never occurred to Lieutenant ; Douglas before, but at this momeut the ; idea did come to him that he was in love with the widow. He drew her to j him and kissed away her tears, and be-; fore he knew it he was engaged to Alice j Deering. j Ho left soon after arranging to have i Alice join him later in the summer, but owing to the loss of a distant relative, j the heir of whose modest estate she was, her coming had been greatly delayed. It j was now more than a year since Tom j and she hud parted in Washington. In ' tbe meantime Tom had whiled away his I leisure hours in the somewhat narrow circle of Sitka society, but in that nar row bound he had found a fair Russian flower that he knew bloomed for him. j Though Tom had not made love to Na- j talia he was too honorable for that they had been together constantly, and each knew instinctively what was in the other's heart. "I believe I'll go and tell Natalia all," Tom continued to muse, "right now, for of course as a gentleman and ol.topr I am liound to keep my word, mid iny word is given to marry Alice haug it ! I wish I had never been born. She, too, poor girl, may discover that my love has somewhat cooled. If it ever was love, it never was the same feeling I have for dear little Natalia, bless her loving heart. " So Tom went to Natalia and told her that lie was engaged, and that another month would see him married. Her delicate face whitened, but con trolling herself she said : "I congratulate you, Mr. Douglas. " Then, bursting into tears, she turned away. The sight of her tears was too much for Tom. Embracing her tender ly, he said: "I love but you, Natalia, darling. Oh, that I had met yon first I My fondness for Alice was but a fleet ing thing, and my love for you will last forever." Pressing warm kisses on her lips, he held her close. "Loavo me, Tom. It is right for yon to keep yonr word, but yon should hve told me of your engagement before. Yi'e had best part now. Goodby. " "But can't I come to eeo you, Na talia, as usual?" "Why, ceruinly not, ilr. Douglas I ytM only be palnfnl, for we can never, from thin time, forward, lo any thing but tho most formal of Mends. " Tom wiw touched by tlio simple dig nity of tho young Russian girl, whom quiet life had boon spent by tho ea tihnre. under the shadow of tho moun tains, far from the noise, of oily or ( town, so ho bowed to her will Their parting was a heartbreaking one to both. i "Xatalia, I can't bear to leave you. I must have you, tleaivst. " "There, go now. This is oulv fool Mi." "Well, then, let mo kiss yon for tho last time, darling," pleaded Tom. Xalalia put up her lit t lo tear stained faoe, and Tom silently kissed her and went away. That month passed only too quickly for pnir Tom, who limked with dread toward tho coming of tho steamer. Ho studiously avoided Natalia, denying biniself the regular afternoon walk to , tho Indian river, which is tho event of j tho day to all thowhito people at Sitka, i He kept oloo to his rooms when not on j bivird ship, cursing tho mistake of his ; life which was so mion to make an uu- j willing bridegroom of him. To Natalia, whoso soft, brown eves ' wero rod with weeping, lift) seemed a dreary bhuik now that tho daily visit of Tom had ceased. There appeared in ! her men til horizon nothing for which to live. Hie wondered how she had exist-! oil before he camo to Sitka. But then 1 she had been bnsy with hex lessons, and j now, in the idea of her old fahioucd ! father, her simple education was com plete, and it was time for her to niarr ' one of tho Russian Luis who sought licr ' hand The next "steamer day" Tom Douglas was seen rushing madly to Natalia's ; home. The neighbors, who of course bad 1 noted his long absence, were greatly sur-' prised. "Natalia, Natalia," he cried as soon as she camo into the quaint drawing room to receive him. "I've come to ak yon to be my wife. Dearest, say yes et once. " I "Why, Tom, aro you crazy? What lus become of Alice?" "Well, by George, Natalia, she is ; married 1 Just think of it married ! ; And I am tho happiest man on earth. ' A pardoned convict's feelings of rulicf , are not to be compared to mine. Y n see, soon after she left Washing;m she met an old sweetheart whom she ha.l cast off to marry Mr. Doeriug, whe ;e , position and prospects seemed better. Iu the meantime this follow had made a 1 fortune, and as he was on his way to '. Alaska for a ploasnro trip they decided j to make it also a wedding trip and break the news to me in person. Ruther awk ward, yon might think, but I cougratu- : lated them with all my heart and thank- ed my stars for my freedom. Como, lit tle girl, put on your hat, and I'll tal.e j yon down to the sterner to see tl.e ' brido, and I'll introduce to her n y fiancee, because you say, 'Yes,' don't , j you, dear?" j I "I suppose so, Tom, but it's all so i j sudden. Shall I wear my leghorn hat?" St. Louis Republic, SrsndinaTian WooU Pnlp. The amount of wood pulp now pro duced in Scandiuavia is reported to be enormous, and besides the many wood pulp mills there are a large number of native cellulose and sulphite works, the former supplying more than one-half the wood pulp production. Next to these ! come the sulphite mills, the wood pulp ! mills exporting barely half their pro- ! ductiou, or considerably less in quantity ! than the sulphite and cellulose. Almost ' all the paper exported from Sweden is said to oe made trum wood pulp. A re cently published account of this industry show a total of some 93 establishments, and fur 55 of these the aggregate power, usually water, is reported to equal about 13,000 horsepower. The most important of these are thus enumerated : Those of Onion, Tralhatton, 2,450 horsepower, with 24 horizontal and 2 vertical mills; that of ' Munkitlal, Uddevalia, 1,250 horsepower, with 10 horizontal and 1 vertical mill, und Tossefors, Ottebal,900 horsepower, with 17 horizontal mills. There ore 12 patron cellulose works and 17 sulphito establishments. New York Sun. What Makes Niagara Falls' Power? What makes Niagara falls' power pos- Bible is the fact that Lake Superior, ; Luke Michigan, Lake Huron and Luke Erie, with a combined area of 90,000 ! I square miles, representing the reservoirs i of some 250,000 square miles of water- shed, are situated 600 feet above the sea j level. The great volume of water fall ing over the vast territory flows on its natural course to the Atlantic ocean with but a slight descent, until it is brought into the narrow Niagara rivpr, when, in the rapids Just above the falls, it declines C5 feet and then, with a sin gle plunge, drops into the abyss, 105 feet below. Eminent engineers have com puted that 275,000 cubic feet of water pass over tho falls every second, repre senting in theoretical enorgy over 6,000,- 000 horsepower. Cassier's Magazine. Improving on Nature. "Horrors!" exclaimed the beautifal lociety woman. "Do you mean to try to loll me that picture as an artistic pres jntation of a group of horses?" The great artist paused a moment be wildered. Then a light broke in upon him, and with a few rapid strokes he painted out all the long, graceful tails Dn the horses and substituted for each a docked tuft that stuck, out straight like a pump handle, "Ah," said the society woman, clap ping her hands with pleasure, "now that Is a picture worth having.
