DEMOCRATIC COSVEXTIOS. For Clackamiis County Met in Oregon City Saturday. The democratic county convention as sembled at Tope's hall at !) :30 lust Sat urday morning. V. Irwin. otCanhy, was elected temporary chairman, P. 1 Coleman secretary, and I. IMahieu assistant. A committee on credentials was R minted, and the report brought in at 11:30 found 100 delegates entitled to testa. A committee of five on organization, and a like committee on platform and resolutions was appointed, when a re cess was taken until 1 :30. AFTKKNOOX 8K88IOX. The committee on orginiiation re ported favoring the election of T. II. Robbing for permanent secretary, and the chairman and assistant secretary be declared permanent officers. The report was adopted. The committee on platform and reso lutions reported as follows: The democracy of Clackamas county in convention assembled, hereby re-affirms its allegiance to the time-honored principles of the great democratic party, heartily endorses the principles enunci ated in the national platform adopted in the Chicago convention of 1S92, and hereby earnestly urges upon our repre sentatives in congress prompt and speedy action towards the rel'iatiou of the prom ises and pledges therein made. Resolved, That we denounce the ex travagance and corruption of the repub lican party, that has for so many years encouraged special class legislation and the np-buildirg of monopoly, and which has culminated in bringing upon the industrial interests of our country such disastrous consequences, and has resulted in a most complete paralysis of honest competition and dis heartened legitimate enterprise. We emphatically condemn the republican methods of high taxation, and lavish ex penditure of money in both national, state and comity affairs. Resolved, That the frauds against the noverntnetit recently discovered, where in large quantities of opium and laige numbers of Chinee laborers were smug gled io'o this country, and in which many of the most prominent republican leaders of the northwest were implicated is exclusive of the unfitness of there publican party to manage the affairs of this state, or to he intrusted with the interests of its teople. We hereby co operate with the public officials in their efforts to exoee such frauds and bring the offenders to justice. Resolved, That the democratic party hereby extends to any and all parlies a challenge to openly, fairly and jointly discuss the issues of ibe coming com- paign. A resolution endorsing the Initiative and Referendum, and pledging the can didates in writing to support the meas--ure, was received in a most frigid man ner. Finally, however, when the reso lution wa9 about to be voted down, W. 8. U'Ren asked permission to talk ten minutes on the merits ot the measure nd at the conclusion of his remarks the resolution was unanimously adopted, and it was made a plank in the platform. Eight delegates to the state convention were elected as follows: W. E. Carll, G. A. Harding, I. K. Gribble, R. T. Caufield, C. D. Latour ette, J. H. Thorne, Mr. DuPree and Mr. Vaughn. lion. J. H. Thorne was nominated for state senator by acclamation. For representatives, W. E. Carll, P. A. Baker and Martin Robbins were nominated by acclamation. It was no easy matter to get timber for the offices as the nominees declined as their names were proposed, and it was necessary for the chair to remind the convention that the ticket was not full. For county judge G. S. Risley received seventy votes and Col. White twenty five. For commissioner, Geo. J. Currin re ceived the nomination on the second ballot. Henry Ganz, J. K. Gribble and Albert Howland were in the race. C. W. Oanons was nominated for sheriff by acclamation. For county clerk W. B. Stafford was nominated by acclamation. The name of J. Dickey of Mo?alla was presented for recorder. Mr. Dickey de clined stating that he would not be a can didate under any circumstances, having been sacrificed twice before for the sake of principle. However, he was nomi nated by acclamation. But as Mr. Dickey still persisted in his refusal to accept, the vote w as reconsidered and the nom ination given to W. A. Shipley For treasurer A. J. Washburn re ceived fifty-eight yotes and J. Martin thirty-one. Steve R. Green was nominated for as sessor by acclamation. For school superintendent, David War ner received fourteen votes alid C. Y. Draper sixty-eight. Fred Hesse was nominated for sur veyor by acclamation. For coroner, John Wiseman was nom inated by acclamation. A grand time is to be bad at Los An geles on the 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th of this month in celebrating the discovery, rise and progress of Southern California, consisting of a parade each day, par ticipated in by Indians, soldiers and all the bands of Southern California. A LETTER A 110 l"T OKEUOS CITY. Some Interesting Tilings That art to be round Here. Mrs. May Held writes to the Omaha World Herald an interesting letter in which among other thing occurs the following concerning this city : "I will notenter into deserintion of Portland at this writing, as I must toll of tho grand country away out here, "where rolls tho Oregon." A visit was mado to Oregon City, the first capital of Oregon territory, a pretty manufacturing town of 5,000 in habitants. It is situated up the Wil lamette, about ten miles from the city limits. Here is what is known as the falls of Willamette, having power suffici ent to run all the machinery in the state. Here is located the fourth oldest land office in the I'uited Stalest. To see a log towed into the mill race, chained and brought before the saw, put into a vat and ground to it pulp, and then rolled into paer, was a new rvali lation to me, but such was the case, and I was inlormed that it was no uncommon thing to see a long log rolled into the mill in the morning and in the afternoon see a man who "can't afford to take paper" around at a neighbor's awaiting to borrow a copy of that same log in order to learn the latest news about the progress ol the Wilson bill, or to see if it contained any more of Senator Allen's famous silver speeches. The water power at Oregon City is second only to that of Niagara An electric liw'ht plant supplies the power and light for Oregon City and a large amount of machinery in Portland, as well as lights for the latter citv. The samecotnpany, the General Electric, is putting up the largest electric plant in the United States, it is claimed if not in the world. The work on the foundation for the building has been going on for over a year, and I am told that to pre pare the foundation, which is blasted out of the solid rock, it will cost 10O,0OO alone. Across the river at this place is what was the first free suspension bridge in the world. It is a magniticient structure and a credit to any state. The trip to Oregon City was made by boat, and tlib return by electric line. About a mile of the road goes through a beautiful forest of firs, and here it was I beheld for the first time the feeling of the giants of the forest. While in Ore gon City I learned that away back in the 40's people came from Olympia, now the capital of the state of Washington, a distance of 140 miles, to mill, it requir ing three weeks to make the ronnd trip. There being no ferry on the Columbia river they were obliged to make rafts, take their wagons to pieces, place their vehicles on the raft, and swim their cattle across the river, which is two and one-half miles wide at this point. This was certainly pioneering under difficul ties. At Oregon City lives Patirck Ma loney, aged 100, last December, and who for the last eighty-five years has been voting the democratic ticket, and he told my relative that it was this and tobacco to which be ascribed bis lon gevity. "Among the many testimonials which 1 see In regard to certain medicines perform ing cures, cleansing the blood, etc.," writes IlK.vny Hciibok, of the jamei Hmitli Woolen Machinery Co., Philadelphia, fa., "none impress me more than tnj own case. Twenty years ago, at the age of 18 years, I had swellings come on my legs, which broke and became running sores. Our famllyphyslclan could do me no good, and It was feared that the bones would be affected. At last, my good old mother urged me to try Ayer's Sarsaparilla. I took three bottles, the sores healed, and I havs not been troubled since. Only the scars remain, and the memory of the past, to remind me of the good Ayer's Sarsaparilla has done me. I now weigh two hundred and twenty pounds, and am in the best of beal Ih. I have been on the road for the past twelve years, bare noticed Ayer's Sarsaparilla advertised in all parts of the United States, and always take pleas ure in telling what good It did for me."
