The second imnl . County Convention ot the Society of Chris tian Endeavor was held at this place in the j PL Johns hicoial church last Friday and Saturday. It was spiritually a ftrand snc cess, but owing to the inclement weather the lull number ot delegates were not in attendance. The church, however, was well filled at each meeting to listen to the excellent program which was well rendered. The reports (riven by the different dele rates show a very large increase in this good work. At the business meeting Satur day afternoon the following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, T. J. Gary, Milwaukee; first vice-president, Erastus Smith, Oregon City; second vice- president, R. Margraves, Springwater; third vice president, George Hamilton, Tark Place; secretary, G. W. Beattie, Oregon City; treasurer, Mrs. White, Oregon City. The committee appointed to select a meet ing place for 1S4, reported that they de cided to meet in the First Presbyterian church, Oregon City. The young ladies of the Milwaukee Endeavor served lunch and dinner to the delegates and visitors in an excellent manner at the school house. The tables were heavily laden and all did justice to the grand feast. After adjournment Saturday evening a special car was in wait ing and after the usual hearty hand-shake and good-byes said, the delegates departed to meet again next year. Miss Ella Mooney returned after two months visiting old acquaintances and friends In St Louis, Ohio and Chicago. She also visited the St Louis exposition and the world's fair. Last Wednesday there was born to Mr. and Mrs. Smith Mullan a girl baby weigh ing 12 pounds. Mother aud child doing well. Richard W. Scott, Jr., left Sunday even ing for Chicago where be intends visiting the great white city and other places of in terest. Mr. and Mrs. T. L. Charman of Oregon City, were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Bonnett Sunday. They left Monday for Chicago where they will visit the world's fair. Mr. Francis, the motorman injured in the East Side railroad wreck some time ago is still confined to his bed but is Improving very slowly. Mr. R. Scott, county commissioner who was injured by having the end of heavy plank drop and strike his limb is able to be about by the aid of crutches. tillery and telling them for 40 rents per bushel. Ringo have gone to the coast for the benefit of Mrs Klngo's health which has been very poorly for some time, A. D. E. Elmer has returned to Mon mouth to resume bis studies. Mr. Anderson is teaching school with large number of attendants. Eienora Jewell made a pleasant trip to Curnnsville September 30th to attend tl teacher s association and also to visit ac quaintances. Neal Jackson is building a comodious barn. Henry DeShaier and Ralph Jones from Eagle Creek, were visiting their uncle an aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Jewell, last week. Coyotes are plentilul now, as they are to be seen in the day time. G. W. Grace is getting his supply of winters goods some of which he is oll'erln, very cheap. Mrs. t. L. Clarke is on the sick list Several of the farmers are talking of set ting out a number of acres in hops the com mg spring. Saiunel Elmer and Mr. Kayser have nearly completed new residences which are a credit to the neighborhood. Emma Tinnerstet is stopping at I. I. Clarkes. Alma. HARKS PRAIRIE. Too; Wet for Farming Grain not Tbrwhed Several Visitor. Masks Prairie, Oct 9. Owing to the continued heavy rains the past week the farmers are completely laid off with their farm work, and if it continues for the next few days they will be completely knocked oat for the next month to come. There is yet considerable threshing to be done in the adjoining communities. Cait Wm. A. Dozier, who has been on this prairie visiiing friends and relatives for the last mouth, left last week for Walla Walla. A. E. Marks, of Salem, who has been here tor several days looking after his crops and other business, returned home last week a much wiser man than be ex pected, owing to news he received while on the prairie. Mrs. Emma Hanson, of Salem, who was visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. F. Marks of this plate, received word one day last week that her ton Ernest, aged 12, bad taken a small tube off a stationary engine in his lather's shop and put a spoonful or two of powder therein and wadded some paper on top, after which be applied a match, then put it into hit mouth and at tempted to extinguish it when it ex ploded, badly injuring his face and mouth. Mrs. Hanson returned home on the next train to Salem. M. J. Johns and wife, of Woodbnrn. were the guests last 8unlsy of T. M. Farnsworth and wife. Mist Winnie Baty accompanied them on their return for a few days visit. J. R. Williams and wife left last Monday morning for their home in the East. Mr. Williams was heard to remark that his back had already begun to itch as though the moss had started to grow, and be was very anxious to get away before the webs began to form on bis feet. The probability is that if Mr. Williama had remained a little longer and the web had grown out he would not bave been to anxious to go back east. Bedland. Rzdlaso, Oct 4. Not much news from this section this week. The Redland store has been moved across the street on lot &5xl05 feet, leased from Asa Boylan for three years, and has now quite an addition built to it and will soon be able to accommodate its many patrons on a larger scale. Last Sunday a report got abroad that there was to be a wedding in the Presbyte rian church. It caused great excitement but proved to be a false alarm. Now we think something in that line is brewing and want no more misleading reports sent out. Diphtheria bat made its appearance in Wm. Sprague's family. Asa Boylan is clearing up land in spite of the rain. Mr. Cortrigbt has his house near com pletion. It will be very convenient, and it is hinted that some young lady near Red land will take charge of the keys, capture the fort and possess the land. Salmon Sayings. Saihos, Oct. ". J. T. Mclntyre has been very ill with an attack of bronchitis, bnt is now recovering under the cars of Dr. Smith of Eagle Creek. Frank Eldridge has returned to this place after a brief stay in Portland. He will re build the cabin on his claim which was lately burned by forest fires. Joseph Wall is building a neat dwelling bouse on his ranch which will cost, when finished, in the neighborhood of KO0. J, A. Linenburger It chief carpenter on the building. The unprecedented rain storms of the last few days have raised all the streams which feed the Salmon and Sandy rivers, and In consequence those streams are up booming, carrying large logs and drifts down, which will likely damage the bridges to a great extent. Salmoh, Oct. Il.-D. W. Parker, toll gate keeer, was down from the gate yentenlay and reports Zigzag and Still Creek bridges both gone; also the two small bridges at the foot of Laurel hill. The new bridge built this spring over Salmon river very nearly went out, it having settled some inches on one side. Born, on the 8th Inst, to the wife of A. J. Odell, of Salmon, twin girls. All doing well. Park Place Pointers. Pari Placi, Oct. 9. The recent rain has resulted in much damage to II. K. Cross. His mill dam in the Clackamas is bursted and the greater part of his saw logs bave escaped. Rev. A. P. Juliet, with tome assistants, will begin a series of meetings here this evening. Miss Sidney Hill, who it teaching near New Era, spent Saturday and Bundayat home. A lew cases of malaria are in our little town. Mrs. Wilkinson ofCanemali held services in the church last Sunday evening. She has a regular appointment here the second Sun day of each month. Our school has been in session three weeks. The enrollment numbers 11.1 and will probably be considerably increased. Mr. and Mrs. J. K, Groom of this place were in attendance at the Christian Endeavor convention at Milwaukee last Saturday. Tbey reported an enthusiastic meeting. In spite of the inclemency of the weather there was present at the school bouse on Thursday evening a large number of our best people who were gathered to listen to the concert and enrertainment given under the anspices of the Park Place band. The quality of the entertainment provided soon convinced all present that they were more than getting their money't worth, for it ranked among the best entertainments ever given in the town. Everything passed oft most pleasantly and to the entire tutisfac tion of all present. Many expressed the hope that the boys would soon prepare and present another entertainment. o'clock Friday night The road are full of water and the Engl Creek Is about up to high water mark. The secretary of the Cape Horn Telegraph company was In Eagle Creek Saturday busy setting poles and I'Mttliig up wire between Sandy and F.ugle Creek. Soon the people of Eagle Creek ran send a dispatch to all parts and receive an answer In a few min utes. Mr. Freeman has moved into hit new house. Born, to the wife of John Marshall, a ten pound girl. Two men of Powells Valley stopped at Mr. Gaqtit't last week for their dinner. While waiting In the titling room one of them put on Mr. Gaqut'a new shoes and left his old ones iu their place. He careful, young man; you have hail your Jaw broken once. W. A. Bokihos, Oct. tt Once more the rainy season has set in and the waters are on the rise. Farmers are putting on a long wry face, fearing they wont get their plowing and seeding done. But never mind; potato dig ging time will come before long. Threshing machines in this part have fin ished their work. Grain turned out very well. Mr. Vetsch had the prize crop, 17'iO bushels. Five hundred of It was wheat, the rest oats, He had the second largest cron of Borings and Damascus this year. H. McCown and Henry Salisbury while corning from the mountains made a flying call at Borings. Our school has entered upon the second half of the term. Peter Vetsch'a watch was stolen one morning a few das ago. The one who stole It would better bring It back and save him self trouble. Cvhhiiisvili.i, Ot. 10. The two-year old child ot Godfrey Shearer, residing two miles north of this place, was badly scalded last Saturday evening. A daughter of Mr. Shearer took the coffee pot from a hot stove to serve coffee, when the handle of the pot gave way, spilling the contents over the child. Mr. I. Miller has hit six room collage al most completed. J. W. Bedford, of Camas Prairie, Idaho, s visiting friends at this place. Horn, October 4. to the wile of John Mar shall, a daughter. W. II. II. Wade made a business trip to Portland last week. Charles Miller, of Leon, was In town yes terday. He reports the storm of last Thurs day night as doing considerable damage to fruit trees at that place. About twsnty-five Warm Spring Indians that have been in the big huckleterry patch for the last three weens, came to this town this evening bringing with them a good supply of berries to trade for goods. Itert Sarver, the famous bear hunter of this section, had the luck yesterday of kill ing two wild geese and a tittle snipe. Bert is an expert among game on the wing. Miss Nena Krigbaum, Florence Davis ml Grace Wilcox, with their "best fellows." were some of the many that went from this berg to the grand hop at Eagle Creek last Friday night. Messrs. Smith, llernette and Goul, of Jarkkmfe, bought a line lot ot oats at this place, paying 4n cents per bushel. Mr. Brooks and E. Koehler of Milwau kee, are in this locality looking for land. They are well pleased with this section of the country and will UK-ate here soon. J. N. Davis, while out hunting the last week, found a ocket book belonging to J. J, Tinker of East Portland. The book is vul ued at Ji). Mr. Davis has notified the wrier and will probably receive a good re ward. (1. The carpenter work of Mr. Pinkley't new house it nearly completed. He has not yet let the papering contract. uarret I'aimateer is smiling out loud, as he is the proud father of a baby boy, born October 5th. Four tramps were permitted to roost in an old Blind in the suburbs of this town last ght. They were headed for Oregon City and complained very much of hard times, Money it like a good newspaper. The larger the circulation the more good it does (if it is a first class paper like the K.itzr. phisi), and the more useful it is. A large cougar was seen the other day in the woods near this village. The news was eipatched to Bert, and no doubt before another week it past he will have a dead cougar. Grandpa Linn narrowly escaied a runa way while coming home from the county seat, last week. In passing a team at a sid ling place hit back was upset. On October S one of the bloodiest fights occurred that is on record at this place. The parties most interested, or those that re ceived black eyes and smashed noses, were Henry Hilet, aged 00, and Robertus Looney, a young man. The cause of the fight was too much neighborhood gossip. While threshing at George Corrin's last week Fred Bullard, aged 74, met with an accident that may prove fatal.
