The worst part of housework is the washing when done in tho old
way, on the rubhoard, rasping the dirt and soil out of each peace sepa
rately, 'by hand. If you have a hand machine it will help out, but even
then someone must push and pull the handle back and forth, and, . al
though it is not hard, it becomes ardous before the family washing is
completed. Then, the wringer must be turned by hand, and this is by
far more tiresome than operating the washer.
Hand operated machines have been done away with in the factory,
in the office, and in the institution, and, iti fact, everywhere. Men now
use machinery operated by power. Why should women not do likewise.

GROW CERTIFIED SPUDS
Twelve Oregon potato growers
reached the standard of excellence
required in growing certified Beed po
tatoes, in 1918, and have received
certificates. Seven of them grew
their certified crops in Benton coun
ty, three in Lane, one eacn in Linn
one each in Linn and Marion. The
largest crop was 1950 sacks produc

and of desirable market qualities.
The ultimate aim is to improve the
quality, yield and market value of
the Oregon potato crop and restore
it to its former vantage point of
preference over all others.
Any grower with a good strain of
.potatoes may enter his field for cer

will visit his field twice a year and
inspect the plants. If not too badly
mixed or affected with too much dis
ease the crop is continued for certi

be tagged with the official certificate

OREGON JERSEY WIRES
CELEBRATE BIG VICTORY
. Having put Oregon at the head of
Jersey producing states the country
over, Oregon Jersey breeders
celebrated the victory by a rousing
jubilee, May 20-24. M. D. Nunn,
president of the American Jersey
Cattle club, and other noted Jersey
specialists have 'come to help the loc
al live wires put it across.
The jubilee was opened with a trip
over the Columbia river highway
Tuesday, followed by a visit to near
by Jersey farms. A banquet was held
in the evening. The remainder or
the time is being spent in visiting
and inspecting some of the champion
ship herds from those of Portland to
that of the agrcultural college at
Corvallis. .
Vive la France, a four-year-old
Jersey owned by Pickard Bros, of
Marion county, has not only broken
the four-year old world record but
also the record for the breed. She
has produced more butter fat than
any other cow of any breed in the
first three milk periods.
The Oregon breeders believe that
climatic conditions and careful selec
tion of foundation stock has put the
state in a class by itself as a Jersey
center, and 'are preparing to make
the most of -these favorable condi
tions. With eight out of 12 class
records held by Oregon, others are in
early prospect.
